That is opposite mine. When I shut it down and ooen the door to leave, the radio stays on for ten plus minutes or until I lock the vehicle. When I re-enter (from a locked position) the audio does not start up until I hit the start button at which point it is at the last volume setting

Before or after you start the car? Mine will start playing when I start the car but not before. Maybe I just have a quick starter finger and start before it would otherwise start playing?

Yes it is possible you beat iDrive starting up when you jump in and hit the start button. You can test if you have a unique vehicle by parking the car, shutting it off, exiting the vehicle (which will shut down iDrive) and closing the driver side door. Then wait a minute and walk to the passenger front door and open it. iDrive should boot up and the radio should come on in its previous configuration.

In all the LCI X5 and X7 vehicles I have driven opening the front driver or the front passenger door in a powered off vehicle causes iDrive to boot up. The rear doors do not have this impact.

Idrive yes but does it turn your radio on or like mine, not until I press the start button?

However, this should not be required and iDrive booting up causes other issues like bluetooth connection to phones which is a problem if you want to receive a call in your house and audio/calls go to your car parked in your garage.
My bad. Must have misunderstood the topic when the title asked how to prevent radio from turning on when opening the door.

If by radio they meant idrive, then yeah, thats a no for me too. It always turns on when i open any door as well. I also dont want want the car to go into "accesory mode" everytime a door is opened.

So when would people like iDrive to come on then...only when car is started? I feel like then there would be complaints about the delay waiting for it to boot up. Not saying I like how it is but what is your alternative?

Good point. I think the solution would be to have iDrive boot up only when it senses the key. That way, if you open the door without the key, iDrive will not turn on.

Very good point but it feels like BMW chose the laziest solution if this was their real intent. I am sure they had to address the delay coming from all hardware buttons to what is essentially a PC in LCI and all its issues at boot up but there are plenty of ways to make a "computer" start up faster including efficient code design, SSD hard drives, pre-loading OS, etc. I don't honestly feel like iDrive is holding me up when I get in to drive the car but maybe I would feel differently if it did not start up when opening the door.

If this was their intent how about only booting up iDrive if you open the driver door? There is very little chance you intend to start the car if you enter through the passenger side. Or at least give me the option to disable the "boot up at door opening" if I don't like it.

yes, in the old days before key fobs and in-car infotainment systems, one can open the vehicle and nothing turns on. the only time things would turn on was starting the vehicle. I see nothing wrong with letting it be that way now, so whether or not one has a key on their person, including smartphone Digital Key, one can still open a door without anything turning on.

does the vehicle’s computer really need extra time to boot up? meh, I’m not convinced. even now it turns on as soon as I approach, get in, start the vehicle, drive off, but the GPS system still hasn’t fully booted by the time I get to the end of my street (4 house lengths away)

evening turning on when opening only the driver door shouldn’t be necessary. how many of y’all just sit in the driver seat and relax? (raises hand)

BMW, let me turn on electronics when I want to!

In the old day of turning keys you didn't have to start car for things to turn on, there was an auxillary mode, key slot used to be marked I and II, II was to start car. It would be good to have choice.

true, but I didn’t think that old ACC ON mode was applicable to the discussion guess it doesn’t hurt to point it out
