Bumping this thread. Can the 40i adequately tow a 3400lbs 2-series on a trailer, an extra set of wheels + some tools, one spouse, and a few little bodies? Shopping for a family vacation hauler, track day tower, and grocery/coffee getter. Definitely < 12k miles a year, so thinking about a lease. Might buy it at the end if the price is negotiable either up front or at lease termination. Has to prove itself and meet our needs for the first 3 years though before I'd commit to buying. Thanks!

I figure ~6000 lbs. is probably a good conservative estimate for car + trailer weight in my situation, given that I haven't purchased a trailer and can't accurately factor its weight into the equation just yet. To make the math easy, let's say 10% tongue weight, so 600 lbs. taken from the rated payload of only 849 lbs. Unfortunately, it seems I would only be allowed to take ~250 lbs. of cargo with me, including myself. Not good, especially considering tongue weight is actually higher than 10% in the real world... Hmmm, I didn't realize the X5's payload rating was so low. I am also looking at the Chevy Colorado diesel. Only 200 HP, but 370 lb-ft. and a payload capacity > 1000 lbs. I swore I'd never own a pick-up though. Ugh.

I recommend reading this thread - https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1567155 Basically, X5 with 5 seats are rated at 850lbs in US X5 with 7 seats (with Air suspension) are rated at 1200lbs in US Both figures are much higher in german website so I am guessing NA side was really conservative with figures. If you get air suspension, I wouldn't worry about towing/tongue weight. |

I'm replacing my Caddy with an X5. Sadly, even with 7200 lbs rating, I don't think I'm going to be able to tow. Even in Florida with no elevation changes, I'd be afraid to try and get out of the ramp.

I did not appreciate the weight of this boat. Definitely, there are guys who are towing such boats with E70 and I do not think that you would have any problem with getting this boat out the ramp with 50i. However, you may not be comfortable with going so far over the mfg specs.

I think I'd tow with the X5 in an emergency, such as a hurricane coming and I can't rent or borrow someone's pickup truck. Other than that, I only trailer to do maintenance, so for the 2-4 times a year I tow, I'd rather just not risk transmission/suspension/leather seat damage. |

This is confusing...but I think the conclusion is I can tow 24 feet 4000lbs boat on 1500lbs trailer with surge brakes. I do have Air suspension package on my 4.0 and factory hitch. Jet ski towing , I don’t even feel anything behind it

I believe there are certain state rules around this (i.e. when the trailer needs to have brakes / surge brakes / electric brakes). In Europe trailers are mostly using surge brakes.

That weight is on the edge of a max tow F150!!!! I would never put that behind a vehicle rated for 7200lbs... It illegal to begin with not to mention dangerous on the road. Looks like you should be looking into getting a 250,2500 series truck for that big boat.... Hell its a ship with that weight. LOL

Honestly, with a two axle trailer instead of a 3 axle, I hate towing and do it as little as possible. I run the boat down to the Keys and have my wife drive and meet me down there. |
