In fact it was more strict until the 7.2017 revision of J852 to apply UNGTR Harmonized Standards which now can be used for certification after delays in updating the CFR's. |

And what relevance, exactly, do pre-2017 standards have on a vehicle produced in 2019? You are like a dog with a bone, you don't know when to quit, but you think that posting irrelevant information most people can't interpret makes you right. It doesn't.

Unless they've been since revised, they are the prevailing standard that vehicles must be built to. Industry standards are not necessarily revised annually.

I have a feeling this is similar to the Hatfields and McCoys, the arguing has been going on so long that each side forgot what they are actually arguing about. I know I don't remember what each position is.

I suspect you may be correct! Maybe I shouldn't have offered my perspective, but I've work in and among industry and regulatory forums for, um, "a few years".

So are there other markers for the battery issue? I have twice received warnings about my battery. Edited to mention my earlier thread on this point: https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...hlight=battery

Since I had my software updated and cornering lights activated I hadn’t really driven in full darkness to get a good test of them until last night. I have to agree with others who’ve commented the current implementation is a bit odd. Aside from the lights not activating with the turn signal, there is a fade in/out effect that delays the light coming on until you’re well into your turn. Pretty much defeats the purpose. When the light is on I think it does provide a good side illumination, it’s just not timely enough. The cornering light setup on my past BMWs that had them were definitely much better.

Dealer has activated cornering lights
I took my 2019 X5 50xi for an unrelated repair and they went ahead and activated my cornering light. The car will be ready tomorrow so I have not seen it working. See the picture of the service they did.
Fingers crossed it will work. |

I've noticed the cornering lights actually work better than I expected, although I wish they would turn on quicker. When driving and going around bends, I've noticed the cornering lights go on irrespective of the turn signal being on or off. A quarter turn of the steering wheel would activate the lights and quite helpful when it's really dark.

I think you are referring to the adaptive headlights rather the the cornering lights. The cornering lights are for low speed, low angle turns, think turning a corner at an intersection. |

Just mentioning that in the UK, there seems to be 3 types of projectors. The Laser ones (with adaptive, and corner), the Icon Adaptive LED that are the same, but without lasers (still with cornering lights) and the 'basic' ones, without cornering, and no high beam assistant.
So you don't /need/ the laser for the cornering lights, but I don't think that Icon Adaptive projector is sold in the US.

When the turn signal is used When reverse is engaged With a large steering angle With the X5, for some reason, they decided to go with only the large steering angle. I have no idea why they did this only. |

Are you sure this accurate? I thought the X7 is operating the same way. The difference is the height of the cornering lights since they are now in the headlight element rather than the fog lights.

See this also: https://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...09&postcount=8 Simply put, the car should start illuminating the side of the road before I start the turn. It senses this by the speed of the car and the fact that I have the turn indicator on. |

The problem with turning ON cornering light whenever you use turn signal or before you start the turn is that it can cause unnecessary glare to traffic. One typical example is doing left turn in intersections in North America. When you move the car forward, turn on left turn signal, and wait to left turn, your cornering light would shine directly towards left side traffic at the red light. Even though the cornering light is supposed to aim downwards, it can still cause glare especially when the road is wet, and it causes confusion to other drivers. I have experienced this while waiting at the red light, and I was cursing about that stupid cornering light in that car The current BMW way would not cause such problem. |

Has anyone confirmed if their cornering lights work upon activation of the turn signal like most BMW models?
I took delivery of a 2019 X5 50i in May (05/19 build and came with 03/2019.48) and could have sworn they worked both upon activation of turn signal and turning the wheel. It has the laser light option. I know they didn't work in reverse like in my 2016 F10 that had the led light package. Being a lurker on these boards for a while, I was ecstatic that they worked cause I checked that evening after delivery once it got dark. However, a problem with my Bluetooth developed and the dealer upgraded to the software to 03/2019.60 and now the cornering lights only light up with the steering wheel angle. Kind of defeats the purpose as they hardly come on when taking dark exit ramps at night unless its really a sharp turn. Hope someone can verify. |

On the G05, they are only activated when turning a sharp angle with a turn signal on. They are not activated with just a turn signal or in reverse as you have noted.
