03/2019.70 - should I update?
I have a service appointment tomorrow first thing in the morning (Saturday 8/31 / US Pacific time) and I’m trying to decide if I should keep it. The purpose is to get a new software update.
The dealership installed 03/2019.70 only a few weeks ago but the following issues persist 1. Radio unresponsive when attempting to change channel via any input method 2. Occasional (although less frequent) CarPlay connectivity issues 3. Tailgate fails to close/lock sometimes when pressing lock button even when key is over 1ft away from the rear tailgate. I saw there were July updates released, yet I had my last software update in August. Perhaps they were recalled? It seems like some updates cause more problems than they solve and at least CarPlay is tolerable now. Who has a newer update than I do and recommends it? Should I cancel and wait for another round of software improvements? Need pretty quick turnaround on opinions/experiences.

There are quite a few folks in here with the 07/2019.xx version and things are running fine. There were a couple who were updated early and had some problems but I don't recall seeing anything recently. Whether that is because people aren't getting updated (supposedly BMW stopped the updates) or if things are going well I do not know. I say go for it since you have some issues that will hopefully be fixed.

My X5 was delivered on 7/24 with software version 03/2019.60. The only issue I had was Car Play only connected about 50% of the time. Talking to the genius hotline about this they checked my software version, verified the car was saying no update was available and said there was a service bulletin recently out about this and I should take it to the dealer for service to check error messages and it would probably need a software update. I just had it in on 8/29, they found the service bulletin, which they did not know about, and updated the software to 07/2019.39. I have only driven it back home and have done many tests out in my garage getting in with the fob and phone like I was going somewhere but not. The Car Play has connected every time so far. The only other change I have noticed is the comfort access has changed a little, but in a logical way. It used to be if I walked out in my garage where the car is unlocked it would wake up and turn on the lights and carpet light as soon as I rounded the front left corner, now it does not do this until I actually touch the door handle to get in. So I just did another test and locked it after I got out then went out later to get in and with it locked it wakes up and turns on as soon as I round the left front corner like it used to. Someone has posted a picture of a new assisted driving display in the dash instead of the map view showing the car with surrounding traffic. I do not seem to have that capability or I can't find the option, and I have looked.

The foreman said that the July update was recalled due to bugs but that he’s received word that there will be a new build deployed Tuesday night that he can install Wednesday morning. He also said the head unit was responding very slowly based on his observation. So he said that he will check to see if the update remedied the slowness or they will call to get approval to put a new head unit in.

The July update absolutely fixes the CarPlay not connecting consistently issue. I am happy with the update. One thing that changed was that the welcome lights no longer come on as I approach the vehicle if I disable the auto lock and unlock feature.

Does the approach lights option no longer exist as a separate choice?

They used to come on when I was 20-30 feet away albeit only about 80% of the time. Now, the lights are basically turning on a second before the doors unlock. I had the car programmed twice now with the July update by two different dealerships and the issue still remains. Other than that, I am not experiencing any other problems. The fix for carplay was worth the hassle of taking it into the dealership for a day. Updating the software involves updating software for a number of separate modules and that is why it takes a lot of time and doesn't always go well. It is time consuming for the dealership and there are multiple points of failure. Last edited by robby818; 08-31-2019 at 11:10 PM.. |

Has anyone done OTA update via connect drive app ? I received the following message while I was playing around the app on my iPhone. Guess I will try it out on a later date. Is it a good idea to do it via OTA update ? Any thoughts ?? Thanks everyone ~

That "OK" selections just enable remote updates, it doesn't do one.

Typically, no. Even if the key check shows that a software update is available, many service advisors will try to brush you off. You should offer a reason for your request. Carplay connection issues will do it.

From my observations trying to report bugs, I think the core issue is not that BMW don't know what's causing the persistent bugs, but rather that they don't even know that these issues exist. We all know the issues, but BMW a) doesn't follow or read these forums, and b) has no facility to acquire software bug reports from customers. So yap, they don't know.
