Filip will have the best info ofcourse, but my dealer informed me on saturday that the official BMW investigation concluded that the hybrid system only had secundary damage, and was not the cause of the fire.
Apparently all (Belgian) dealerships received this info last week.

And what was determined to be the cause of the fire?

Hi to all,

Last week I was invited at the local BMW dealership together with 2 BMW DE experts, 2 BMW Belux technical experts and 1 fire expert of my insurance.
Started at 9h I explained the time-line of what had happened that morning together with all pictures and movies I received from all the spectators. The car was parked at public school parking at 8h20. At 11h26 someone left school and filmed 7sec. Smoke was coming from under the car. Left front air suspension was dead and a strange noise is heared. No fire to detect. The next picture I have the car is already on fire in the front. That's only 10min later. The same picture also shows a burning object next to the back-right wheel. In the next pictures and movies all hell brakes loose.

So last week we investigated the remainings of the car. All parts have been disassembled. Front axle, engine, gearbox, batteries,...

Based on the color of the chassis fire experts can detect where the fire started. Again there are 2 places detected as a possible source. Left-front wheel area and right-back wheel area.

At the end of the they - by exclusion of what not could be the source - assume that the car was put on fire with bad intensions.

WTF!!! Unbelievable, why us? Why at a school?
We live in a small commune Zemst-Eppegem between Mechelen and Vilvoorde. Everybody knows everybody. As far as I know my wife and myself have no enemies of that kind, I hope.

So, a final report will state there are no technical issues with the X5 45e and it is a single case. Let's hope for you all it's true.

My new X5 45e is ordered last week and is pushed in front of production. Car should be delivered by the end of February 2020.

For me the insurance will take care of all because I have a full omnium which covers anything for the full price of the car.

The other insurances now have to look for the 3rd party who started the fire. They should have started already with a criminal investigation.

Greetz,
Filip

Thanks for the very detailed update and sorry to hear what the cause is likely to be. Hopefully it was a one off, random act that was not directed at anyone. Take it easy and hope all is well in the future.

WTF?
Do you believe it was put on fire with bad intentions? Or they can't find a cause and so someone must have put it on fire? The expert of the insurance also agrees with the bad intentions cause?

Maybe a passing environmentalist who sees an X5 and sets it on fire not knowing it is a hybrid?
Or maybe jealousy. These cars attract vandals. I already have had many scratches, deliberately made, on my X6. People are jealous or hate SUV's and they vandalize it. But a scratch or setting it on fire is something completely different.

There are a lot of reports and videos in the USA of vandalism and on-road harassment of Tesla vehicles. I attribute this to Tesla being a symbol of Environmental awareness and therefore a target for certain elements of our population. I'm happy that BMW has made our PHEV's look like all other vehicles and is doing away with the hybrid badging that could make us a target.

What will BMW say this time if another one catches fire? Vandalism?

Their response sounds fishy...

If there wouldn't have been an expert from the insurance company present I might agree. But you know how the insurances work. when there is an inkling of doubt and they can get away with not paying by placing the blame on another party, they woudn't have accepted this conclusion.

Sorry for restarting this old thread.

As a fellow 45e owner I'm wondering if they ever found the 'real' cause of the fire? Last update was 'maybe' put on fire with bad intention. Personally, I find this hard to believe.

Totally fishy.
So, allegedly someone started two fires at different corners of the vehicle without any visible flames (initially). How would one even accomplish this? I'm calling bull shit. It seems easy to assume the stored energy in the car started the fire. Having an interested party (the vehicle manufacturer) make the determination (or non-determination) is very suspect.

Hi Filip,

Now that all these hybrids are being recalled by BMW because of the possible problems with the batteries which can cause fires...
Could yours have been one of those as well even though they did not know about the possible cause yet?

It just came to mind...
