Charging door flap is gone

I had a San Diego-LA round trip yesterday. It was still attached on my last stop for gas, which is 20 minutes from home. Once getting home, it was gone. There's no scratches or anything I could find. Nothing broken on the black hinge piece. No idea what happened. Will try to speak to the dealer and see if they have a matching color in store or can be ordered.

Hopefully the dealer will work with you and file this as a warranty claim. It's obvious it fell off while you were driving.

Now you can flaunt that you have an electric car. I see this a benefit.

My local dealer bought the flap and will have it painted. They quote me 185 for the total, not too bad considering BMW's typical pricing.

How is this not covered under warranty?

I was too busy so I just sent my SA a picture. To get it covered, I would need to make an appointment with him and go to the dealer.

If the new one gets loose again, I will surely have it covered under warranty.

Its interesting b/c the lid itself became dislodged from the entire flap mechanism as can be seen with the fact that the charging port is still covered. I have a hard time believing that BMW will push back here, this should be covered, no different IMO than a piece of body hardware falling off the car within warranty period. Its not like the lid was ripped off by hitting a car/side of garage or something, that would of taken the plastic with it!

The SA asked me if it went through any auto car washes. Funny that only they did it three weeks or so ago when I was trying to get the lock/unlock switch on the passenger door replaced. At home, I always handwash it.

The X5 has less than 4000 miles. My theory is the original lid had a couple of weak clips, which broke off after vibrations and heat cycles. I will upload a picture of the new lid once I receive it.

I hope when the lid fell off, it didn't damage any other cars.

Yes, but they don't have it in stock. So they did a special order and painting it to metallic mineral white costs about 145 or so.

That's garbage. You shouldn't have to need to make an appointment for this for them to file under warranty. Even if its only $185, you shouldn't have to pay for it. Even if you went through an automatic wash, parts shouldn't just fall off. I would talk to the service manager about it.

How does the dealer know someone wasn't screwing around and decided to pop it off for kicks while the OP had their car parked? They don't. Not saying that he did, but there is no way to prove that it "just fell off".

Now, if the dealer had some good customer relation skills, they would comp it. But it's just as easy to claim it was a result of external damage with a straight face.

That's true, but as a good business a dealer would take the customer statement at face value. If they want a service appointment to inspect it to align with the story then fine. But on a recently acquired car with so few miles it would behoove them to get it done gratis to the customer; either through a warranty claim or comp. They do you want you to come back in the future to buy another expensive SUV and get the service there.

I don't work for a dealer, but if there is no sign of anything physical happening to the port. Like broken clips or whatever then they should get BMWNA to cover it under warranty...

If it happened to me and BMW approached it by calling me a liar and not wanting to cover a cheap part of theirs that failed it would leave a pretty sour taste in my mouth. A taste sour enough to make me less likely to buy the brand again.

Pennywise and pound foolish is the way I'd describe it.

I'd expect BMW to push back on expensive warranty repairs that are questionable. Like you go in with a car needing a new engine or transmission and they want to check to be sure you haven't modded the car or done insane things to it. But arguing with you on something that probably cost them less than $100 on a $70K car?

charging port door fell off

My wife has a 2022 x3 30e and tonight when she got to her car she noticed he charging port door of the floor of the parking garage. No damage or broken pieces. It was simply laying on the floor. I will post a pic once she gets home. Will bring to dealership in the morning to see about repairs.

Bizarre. How do we check if ours is about to fall off? What are the weak points?

My wife had a new x1 years ago where the gas lid actually fell off during a car wash. If you examined the lid, it was actually just slid in and held in with friction. Very poor design.

It's a bit more than a friction fit...there's tabs that slide over a ramp, that require the panel to bend slightly to then hit a recess that holds it in place. It is designed to come off if opened and hit. Depending on the configuration of a car wash, it might have caused the door to open, and then, it's fairly easy for it to pop the door off.
