Any hesitation to take G05 in for service during coronavirus pandemic?
I may call my local dealer and ask questions about what is being done to protect clients so have any local dealers posted how they are responding to the pandemic?
I have a list of issues, but no known G05 crisis on the horizon. I know there are two other threads related to the coronavirus and if this is not a new question it should be merged with the relevant thread.

Sorry but not enough information.
I have an appointment in two weeks. Given things as they are and assuming the dealer is still open, I'm planning on going in. Why? No crowds, and the way I see it, it's how you manage the risk which is something only you and maybe your doctor can answer. What will I personally do? Remember this isn't up to the dealer to manage. It's your risk too. And to those you interact with. I will use gloves when driving my loaner. I will wash my hands when I get back home. I will also avoid close contact with others. I will also bring my own pen to sign anything that I'm asked to sign. I'm also in the Seattle area with a wife who's in the medical field and works with infected patients on a daily basis and practices universal precautions. That said, if you don't need to go in then don't. Put this off for a few months if you can. Last edited by Pictor; 03-16-2020 at 12:05 PM.. Reason: That said, if you don't need to go in then don't. |

There is much good in your post Pictor but I was mostly thinking about the kind of cleaning my car would need when I get it back. More than one item on my list requires them being inside the vehicle, not just under the hood.

Early studies show COVID-19 can last from a few hours to several days (3-days on plastic and stainless steel). This is why my comments above about gloves. This should also apply to your own car for a few days after pickup. Surface transmission isn't though to be the primary vector for infection but it's best to be safe. Surface transmission is most risky when you touch your face after touching an infected surface. So wear gloves and if you have the ability to use a disinfectant wipe (Clorox, etc.) the hit the high touch surfaces.

Took mine in this morning. When I got it back I wiped down all the surfaces they might have touched with an alcohol wipe - then drove home with all the windows and sunroof open.
Felt like it was enough. |

Drop your vehicle off and go outside or go home. I wouldn't hang around in the waiting area.

Maybe they should introduce Drive Through servicing? - just lock the door and wait in your car while they service it !
I can see myself hanging in the car while they raise the car on a hoist... On a serious note, our cars all have long-life oil - so unless anything is broken, I'd just wait until things settle down. These new cars really don't need much done to them except oil, especially in the first 30-40,000km. Another good reason for OTA S/W updates ! ..then again, I'm happy with 11/2019.34 - I wouldn't want some S/W release full of bugs coming through right now. |

And as someone who works with software and large scale system deployments, I'm all for OTA updates but I also understand that those can also cause their share or problems if not managed right. |

I stand to be corrected, but Condition Based Servicing (CBS) on some aspects can be quite conservative - and brake fluid should last an extra 3-6 months easy. I once waited almost 12-months before changing the brake fluid in the wife's F25 X3, and all was good. As for large scale S/W deployments, if I was BMW, and with their track record, I'd hold off on anything new. |

I just took in the X5 and my daughter's 230 for an oil and brake fluid change on Saturday. It was definitely not as busy as it normally is in service. I even arranged to get an oil change appointment with a loaner for next Monday for the M2. I have to say the new car sales floor was "dead" but I'm attributing that to the decline in the market.

I've received a couple notices from BMW dealers regarding the virus, here is what United BMW of Georgia sent. The others were very similarly worded.

Perfectly reasonable response. There is such disproportionate reactions to create political friendly optics it’s now nauseating. Corporate PR is now working overtime on their platitudes as not to look insensitive.

Brake fluid changes are time based because partially because of the risk of the fluid absorbing moisture over time. I'm sure I would be fine for another 2-3 months. Possibly even 6 months. I used to try and replace the fluid every two years. BMW recommends the fluid be replaced every 3 years. As long as the closed system is not compromised going over the 3 years by a few months is probably okay and my lease is up next month. I'm hard on my brakes. Brakes and tires are things I don't mess around with too much which is why I said above that unless something changes, I'm planning on taking my car in for service. Right now I'm much more likely to contract COVID-19 from my own wife who's a healthcare professional working with infected patients than I am from taking the car for service (assuming I take reasonable precautions). Now, if the dealer closes shop then I'll obviously hold on replacing the fluid. |

Don't bring your car in for service unless it's literally leaving you stranded on the side of the highway. I work in the healthcare field, and I can assure you it's not worth the added risk over something like car service.

Potential infection is by droplet infection by somebody coughing or sneezing next to you (stay away 1.5 - 2 m) or touching a surface some hours after an infected person touched it. And then touching your own nose or face. So wash your hand frequently and touch your face a less as possible. I think if you leave your car alone for a day or so everything in your car should be gone. Maybe it would be an idea to ask the dealer to open all windows to ventilate the car before pick up. Wash frequently touched surfaces with alcohol. Door handle, steering wheel, on off button. And wash your own hands after you get out and park you car at home And for the ac and air intacte it would make more sense to install a ffp 2 or 3 airfilter. I don't know if that exists. But like mentioned. Avoid unnecessary contacts. So if it can be done in two months do it then. |

My impression of these alerts is that they sorta have to tell us they are doing something. Many/most dealers are open (well as of a couple of days ago anyway) and if they want customers to visit, they have to tell them something good. Whether they all actually do everything they say they are doing is another story. Thing is with this virus, they shouldn't be doing the cleaning just for the customer, it helps them as well.

I agree also. If your on the older side and especially if you have any underlying health conditions there would be no reason to take any risk..
I would hate to have my death or the death of someone else the result of me wanting an oil change. Everyone needs to take this seriosly. Dont go anywhere until we hear the data and whats going on. Its changing to fast. |
