Just killed my bottle of Martin Miller Westbourne Strength. Bottle of Nolet's to get me thru the night, but need to run down a new bottle of St George Terrior to replace the MM.

Just picked up a new to me Ardbeg - the Corryvrecken...going to open that up tonight or tomorrow, very much looking forward to it after a great experience with the 10 year old (Ardbeg).

Sunday night dinner, Revelry wine with dinner. Kettle one dirty martini for the wife as cocktails (I've got Kim Crawford sauv blanc not shown). Preparing for my broncos to crush the "G'men"

I tried the Ardbeg Corryvrecken the other night. Wow - that is one that needs a little diluting. Mouth feel straight is not overly pleasant, but that is likely due to it being 115 proof.

However, once diluted with a little water, it opens up reasonably well. That being said, I feel the Ardbeg 10 is still a much better scotch than the Corryvrecken and the Corryvrecken is much more expensive. Thus, it will be my last bottle.

I'm confused by this whole "water opening it up" trend I see. What does water have to do with a finely aged, cask-strength nip of mother's milk? Don't think I have yet polluted my A'Bunadh with water.

amirite Mark?

No, you're not right. Add a little, fresh, filtered, cold water to any whisk(e)y.

Sorry to disappoint, but I prefer a splash in my Scotch or Bourbon. I usually go with seltzer. I like the fizziness.

I guess I have my marching orders. And to be fair, I'll have to repeat the "experiment" on different days, giving water the go first, then neat the second day. Science and all!

Science is an awesome reason to drink. I would recommend a tap water, Topo Chico, Gerolsteiner and Fever Tree Club Soda taste off.

With a new (to me) brand I start with a drinking straw (as a pipette) and add just a little bit at a time - I don't find that there is a standard ratio, some need a lot, some only a few cc's, and I never get down to the 25% that the article mentions. The cask strength ones generally need more - I do think that at a certain level the high proof stuns your taste buds somewhat. I prefer 'non-chill-filtered' versions, as these have even more of the flavor compounds still in them (Laphroaig cask-strength 10yo is probably my current favorite).

And Abunadh is one that definitely benefits - do yourself a favor and try it that way.

Ok I put a splash of cold water in the A'bunadh and it did cool the burn nicely.

But if I take a snifter at bedtime full strength I wake with the best breath of the day
