What does the red P in the square mean?

Hello,

I was forwarding into my office car space today. I turned on the parking cameras so I didn't hit the column or the wall. There was a chime and a red P appeared as per the attached image, bottom right corner of the screen beside "settings".

What does it mean and what is it for?

It’s a parking space (which it may or may not be in my experience!) that the parking assistant has identified. You tap the red square and the car will auto-park in that spot.

You can turn the feature off if you don’t want to make use of it...

You saying it has identified spaces that didn't really exist? That would be hard to auto park in!

It identifies one of my closed garage doors as a parking space when I drive up beside it. Haven't tried letting it park there yet

You would hope the parking sensors would see the obstruction and stop it, but not sure I'd be brave enough to try.

I've resisted the urge.

I am assume you were in "Drive"? What is behind you? In my short experience using that feature for shits and giggles, it means that is a potential space for the vehicle to back into.

The P oriented that way means it thinks there is a perpendicular spot on the right side for the car to back into. If it was oriented vertically it would indicate a parallel parking space. The auto parking actually works quite well, surprisingly so, and I use it pretty often. It’s usually best if the space is in between two cars. Also once you’re parked when you get back into the car it will display an arrow which if you click the car will do the work of getting you set up to exit the space. This came in very handy when my wife was driving out of a very tight and steeply inclined spot that the valet had left the car in - it took around 6 forwards and backwards reversals but eventually it got pointed out.

That P indicates that car has found a parking spot, when you tap on the P it will park automatically in that spot. In this case its perpendicular parking, if its a straight rectangle it means parallel parking. Works fine in tight spots but be aware that it also detects drive way exits as parking spots.

Next time when looking for parking just press the camera button next to shifter knob and car will detect parking spot, once detected, stop your car completely and press on P rectangle and car will park automatically.

Thanks Jedi,

I'll give that a go. My dealer in Sydney is hopeless with support and training on the car. I'm really relying on this forum.

Cheers

Nope .... the mob near Belmore. Mine was a demo ... they didn't detail it properly. They double booked my appointment with the BMW genius and the other guy got there first ... so I missed out. I walked out of the dealership absolutely furious ... no one ever called to follow up.

Yes, dealers are all the same ... once they take your money they couldn't give a ....
