That threads reads a bit like: "Spacers caused my arthritis and my brother's divorce. Spacers are the worst." The comments are not particularly wrong, but with a little conservatism and care, the reality is more benign. My summary:

- anecdotally, I've used spacers on multiple bimmers, including an M3 and the G05 X5 now, but in all cases the intent and result was to get offsets back to stock; have not tracked with spacers, track wheels were always one piece with offsets specifically designed for the platform

- if spacers are used to bring custom rims back to stock offsets and placements, they are, in fact, very beneficial for restoring "per factory" setup

- if spacers are used JUDICIOUSLY (ie conservatively ie small offsets) for only aesthetics on stock rims (the majority of this current thread), there should really be no noticed negative issues as the small spacers are very likely well within the design margins on the setup

- I don't think many of us track G05 X5s (or even X5Ms), but I would personally feel more comfortable without spacers and, in general, minimum components that can break for the high-stress of a track; I've seen a few crazy mechanical failures on the track, including our "high performance" and "high reliability" bimmers (usually steering, suspension, brakes, and the occasional engine)

- large spacers (say more than 30mm on stock rims, just an unjustified guess) probably do have a negative impact on handling, possibly long long term reliability, and may even have (unlikely, but non-zero) increased safety concerns, particularly on a heavy SUV; I don't recall anyone here going that crazy and if you do, you're already into pimping out your ride and have other priorities

- do small spacers increase launching of road debris at self or others? maybe, but I doubt it could actually be quantitatively measured to be a fact as you're only moving the non-contact patch part of the tire out by a few millimeters

For myself, I don't need the aesthetic "improvements" of spacers, but properly adapting non-stock rims is routine.

Appreciate this feedback. I'm never used spacers, but on my new 45e I've just bought some (12/17) for the aesthetic value as the 740 and 741 wheels need them IMO. Yet to be installed, but because they seemed so commonplace here, I had not even considered any negatives.
I figured most of the negatives would be minor of any, on a small spacer for normal driving conditions.

12/17 installed with 40mm/45mm bolts. Very happy with result. Fronts are very close to upper fender edge, back are lightly tucked. I was going to do 12/15, the most popular choice, but wanted the rears a touch more agressive. I could have done 18 in back, 20 might be too agressive for imo (though I know it looks good when vehicle is lowered).
In general I’m very happy with outcome. I’ll be putting 741m wheels in late spring, should look great as rears will be staggered.

Thanks to the OP and other contributors. I went with 12mm front, 15mm rear. Happy with the result. Here's some crappy comparison pics.

Edit: I'm officially old, can't get pics to upload. Womp womp.

I'm going with 12mm front and 25mm rear on my 2019 G05 MSport40i with air suspension on a square (winter) setup: 20" x 9" style 740Ms on factory RFT Pirelli A/S rubber.

I'll post pictures post install.
Would like to see this as I have the same wheel
Setup and am thinking 25mm

I have the 21" wheels with 12/15 spacers and am in the process of upgrading to 22" wheels.

Would like to find out what size spacers would give you that "flush" look, I know that 12/15 do not.

It seems that it is 18mm for the rear but what about the front?

Are you lowered or plan to lower it?

Also, which 22" wheels? BMW Original 22" for the car or replica or aftermarket?

I can't answer without details.

Well, 12/15 is perfectly flush if you are at comfort mode.
If you are on sport mode, maybe 13/18 or even 15/20.

So, you have to pick.

All of my customers mostly stick with 12/15 unless if they are going to lower it even more by using my lowering link.

What is the drop with your lowering links, 1" front and rear?

Just ordered an AW X5 Sdrive40i with 742M wheels, picking it up in the next week or so. Interested in grabbing a set of spacers to run it flush or just inside (No Susp. drop planned).

Is the general consensus to run 12/15mm?

It is adjustable.
But recommend is 3/4", anything beyond that, will cause to rub when you switch to Sport suspension.

Generally yes, but some forum members prefer 13/18mm. I have the 12/15mm spacers and am currently not lowered. I definitely recommend 18mm in the rear for a flush look.

Are these H&R spacers for the 5 or 7 series?
They don't seem to show anything for the X5?
Anyone have some Part numbers for 15 and 20mm spacer?
.
