It is not about the key. Car shuts off the moment door is open while driver and key are still inside car.

Yes both ways are not convenient. Please let us know if you find a better way.

I've checked the EU version of 45e and it behaves the same.

I think the only option will be via the coding of modules.

on the 45e, THIS WORKS!

even after the vehicle turned off, including electronics, tapping the fan up button restarted the HVAC.

For 40i and 50i, if ICE is on, you can open door and even walk away with the key, ICE will remain on.

For 45e, first, it is not straight forward to have ICE on when park. if somehow you mange for the ICE on when park, you can also open door and walk away with key, ICE will remain on. But the nature of 45e is ICE isn't on when park. In this case, car will turn off when door is open.

Not correct, haven't tried on my M50i yet but on 40i if you walked away with key ICE shut off, sure it will be same on M50i will try tomorrow.

I almost want to say EU vehicles may be coded differently than U.S. vehicles with respect to idling engines. maybe both of you are correct?

You might be correct, has anybody got a M50 in US to see if ICE shuts off when you walk away from it.

My only data point with 40i is when I help a friend to park her car, she exit and walk away with key in her purse, I can still park the car. She isn't too far, but definitely key out of car.

So, you're in the vehicle, in the driver's seat, and then she exits? Sounds right...the driver is in the vehicle and his door isn't opened. It would likely shut off when you opened the driver's door.

I believe I have got to the bottom of this regarding UK cars at least.
.
My previous X5 was a 2022 40i with 48V system.

My 3 week old car is a 50i without the 48v, have also just noticed it still has a button to disable stop/start.
If I have the stop/start disabled you can leave it running with key out of car.
If stop start is enabled but hasn't kicked in I can open door without ICE shutting off, if the stop/start has kicked in and the engine has stopped when I open door it shuts down.
Another button I am happy to have.

you mean Auto Start/Stop (ASS)? (not engine Start/Stop)

yeah, ASS is a gremlin all its own made worse when they removed the button in newer models so we no longer have control of it

My M50i is 3 weeks old built in March and it has the button, wasn't there on my 40i new in November 2021.
All the models now have the 48V system hence no button to turn off.

ah, you originally posted 50i, not M50i, so I thought you were referring to an older second-hand vehicle

For both the 45/50e, when the vehicle shuts off, it should offer the preconditioning/ventilation function at the "goodbye" screen that pops up. Turn that on before you exit to keep it climatized for a short time while you're out of it, as long as the battery has sufficient charge.

yes, this is an option which I enabled and use often but an earlier post described an easier way with no enabling of settings required

In my 50e if I put it in sport and get out with the key it keeps running but honks the horn at me which is obnoxious as everyone looks. Anyone know how to change that?

Assuming someone is in the vehicle, you could leave the key in it. Note, with the PHEV, it's pretty easy to turn on preconditioning prior to leaving, meaning leaving the engine on at least for that, is not necessary. Letting an engine idle is illegal in some places longer than a set time and that might be an issue.

it's a security and safety risk to keep the engine on and idle, so can't be changed (or even coded). as mentioned, if it's for passenger comfort while you step out quickly, turn on preconditioning before you open the door and exit. you just have to ensure (plan) to have enough battery capacity on hand to run the HVAC. otherwise, you'll need to resort to workarounds (not recommended)

I have the same observation. As long is ICE is running, driver door can be open, drive can exit, car will remind on. If ICE is NOT running, if (drive door open, AND foot not on brake, AND drive seat belt not buckled), car will shut off.

This is also true for 45e. If I run down the HVB so ICE kick in, I can open door and exit, ICE and car remain ON.

A few questions. In 45e, even in sport mode, if you put car in park, ICE will be off. It isn't easy to keep ICE running when car is in park in any mode at all. What method do you use?

As for the honk, I found it only honk when I lock the car from out side if ICE is running. But it is a 45e

Why to keep the engine running? For HVAC? Just press the fan/temperature button and AC will run for 10 minutes
