Got rear ended two weeks ago from a Toyota Corolla. Dude fell asleep while we were in traffic. Minor crash, maybe 20mph. This is what $20k of damage looks like. Still needs another week or two in the shop before repairs will be done....

I'm sure most of us have been there and done that, on the receiving end like you. Flashed me back to a colossal rear end on the Cross Bronx! Was in my beloved '89 Acura Legend in 1991, stopped in traffic in the rain, when some total POS w/ no insurance and probably illegal alien, barrels into me w/ his white Ford Probe.
All that really matters though, that are all ok....

Yikes! I suspect this guy was on his phone. When he was on the side of the road while paramedics were examining him, he was clutching his phone. Hopefully the cops charged him. Haven’t gotten the updated report yet.

I won’t post videos until this is sorted out, but imagine this: Traffic slows down on the highway. Pretty rapidly. I come to a near stop and start riding my brakes in very slow moving traffic. I look back and don’t immediately see anyone, but I keep looking back. Suddenly I see this red FRS speeding towards me. It was about 10 seconds after I had slowed down before this dude smacked into my car. Made zero effort to slow down or swerve. He wasn’t even looking up.

I was a good 2.5 - 3 cars behind the car in front of me and I was riding the brakes. Yet I got pushed into him hard enough that I smashed his rear windshield and messed up his trunk! I hope they throw the book at him..

20k! That’s absolutely horrendous. I briefly looked under the hood today and the engine got tweaked.. air intakes were disconnected and the bay seemed a little pushed in. Considering this is where the “minor” damage is.. I truely wonder the the final bill would be if they repaired it!

At first I was like $20k, then I remembered that to replace a drivers side mirror and assembly that was swiped off and having to repaint door and 1/4 panel and driver window, cost $7k!

Do our cars have a manual release for the hatch? I’ve read a few threads and nothing seems to indicate a manual release exists. I applied some power under the hood, heard some devices come to life but the car is still powered off. I suspect a safety device kicked in. But unfortunately that means I can’t pop my hatch open..

I got 90% of my stuff out of the car with the seats folded down, but when I installed my dash camera I ran the wires behind the panels in the hatch area. Pretty sure the panels won’t come out without the hatch open..

Luckily I managed to rip out that fancy towing module you sold me that I still hadn’t finished wiring up! Procrastinating pays off sometimes(?).

I know that BlackVue sells them separately.

Finally closing this chapter of my life. Insurance took FOR EVER to settle my claim. (Don't even get me started, I've never been so disappointed in a company before!)

Wow that was a very hard hit! How fast was that guy going? Glad you are ok. X5 did better than I would have expected! Hope it’s totaled bc a hit that hard will probably cause all sorts of latent damage.

Oh my God, what the heck....that's just crazy. I had the same situation a few yrs back while driving my first BMW X3 (very used one), but it was at much lower speed. The speed of that red car was crazy stupid.

First thing the officer did was zoom in to see what he was doing when he hit me. Unfortunately he tinted his windshield! His head was clearly in the clouds because he was not paying any attention. Likely on his phone. (He was clutching it on the side of the road)

Every car will forever have a dash cam from now on!! I was worried insurance was going to say I was following too closely, but luckily a) they never even mentioned it and b) I had proof showing otherwise!

Pretty sure he was travelling at highway speeds.. likely 80-100 km/h. He was moving at the same speed as traffic in the other lanes. I was *VERY* impressed with how the X5 soaked up the hit!!

Yeah, that dude deserves to lose his license. He could have killed someone! I actually saw him coming in my rear view and wanted to change lanes (In hindsight I should have jumped into the shoulder) but traffic didn't allow it. I hate to think about what would have happened to the Jetta in front of me if the X5 didn't soak up that impact!! He was moving at highway speeds...

Insurance took MONTHS but they wrote off the vehicle.

Glad to hear all are ok, definitely should be a total loss, my wife had an accident in her 2020 grand Cherokee. The air bags didn’t deploy and to us the damage was minimal we thought they would repair it. They totaled it.

Glad you are okay man. I recoiled a few times watching that video while thinking about my 21’ F95. I have my dash cam muted but now I might want to unmute it after watching this. Hope none of us have to deal with this but it’s so wild on them streets. And I probably would have wanted to swerve too but you likely did the Jetta in front a favor for real.

This reminds me of when one of my own Infiniti brethren almost ran me off the road on a two lane, dark highway in NJ. All I remember seeing is the illuminated Infiniti logo similar to mine on the front grille swerving around a car in the left lane and coming straight for me. It all happened so fast but I managed to gun it and the 400 hp V6 got the hell out of the way as I swerved left in front of the Volvo I hoped wasn’t there. Took me another 2.5 years before getting a front and rear camera.

Funnily enough, about unmuting the camera… I swore like a sailor when I got hit. I shared the footage with the Jetta owner at the scene and later after calming down a bit I realized said video was likely going to be psssed around to insurance and various people etc.. so I sent him the video you see now, which is censored

But yes! Dash cams FTW. This reminds me that I need to find a all-in-one front and rear for the wife’s z4..

so on the subject of dashcam for accidents... why? the built in one does a pretty nice job and auto-triggers in the event of an accident. why add another?
