iDrive 8.5 Demo
From BMWBlog The next model to get iDrive 8.5 is the 2024 5 Series Sedan (G60), scheduled to premiere in the coming weeks. Based on our knowledge, BMW intends to start production of the i4, iX, X5, X6, X7, and 7 Series with iDrive 8.5 from July 2023. The latest Operating System requires a new head unit, therefore it won’t be offered as an over-the-air update for existing models. Separately, the first two compact cars to get iDrive 9 will be the X1 and 2 Series Active Tourer from November 2023. We should point out that these timelines are subject to change. Wait, so LCI X5s that are in production now will NOT get 8.5? What the eff kind of fragmentation is that, BMW? This has me rethinking purchasing now. Unbelievable.

It's almost like they are scared to use the entire available space on the bottom of the screen. If they would get rid of (or make smaller) the blue/red zones that pulses when the system is heating or cooling, and put individual seat/heated wheel buttons there, it would make everything a single touch.
I'm not even quite sure why they have the display that pulses. If I set the temperature, I already assume the system will either heat or cool until it gets to that temperature. Instead, it looks like they've just broken up the big climate menu into different screens depending on auto/manual. They did add a static seat/wheel button on the bottom, but it brings up a sub-menu, so not only do you have to click again to actually adjust something, you have to move your finger up since it's a popup. I'm guessing if you only have heated seats then the button works like a normal one without the popup. The only real improvement I see is they made it where the climate menu no longer has to scroll if the car has a lot of climate options. That was probably one of the worst decisions I've seen in a car UI. Thankfully that's gone. Having said that, if the "auto" setting for the systems other than the temperature works well (eg, heated seats only come on when it's actually cold), maybe all of that is a moot point. |

Thanks. X5 LCI already has augmented reality in the drivers display (not reffering to middle infotainment screen). It is seen in the autogefühl video on youtube.
I think from the recent video on 8.5 is that it is noticeably faster than 8.0. It can be seen when zooming in/out and voice commands. |

Happy to see the baby "hood" over the ID8 screen. Hopefully, BMW starts to realize that integrating the tech into a dash is better than slapping an IPAD on top of it.
