How “bad” would the 21” M-Sport wheels with performance run flats drive in snow??
I am not talking blizzard or off roading but generally driving on the highway with light snow to flurries. My issue is most all the totally optioned out 50i M-sport vehicle that my dealer is trying to allocate for me have 21” or 22” wheels. Last year I tested (for fun) my C4S with P-Zeros on my snow covered driveway and it made it up the hill without a spin. Any real world experience on what to expect with the 21” wheels and run flats on the X5 in lite snow???

U will die even without snow if it is below 45 they are pretty much like driving on ice - also bad for the tires and most manufacturers will deny warranty if you drive them in the cold as they will crack.

Yes, let me re-iterate what has already been said... Summer performance tires get real hard and start losing traction below about 45*. Below freezing, they are basically hockey pucks. And that's on dry pavement. They are beyond useless if it's actual snow or ice... they are downright dangerous. I see it every fall on my 3. When it gets cold, even if it's dry, just normal acceleration from a stop suddenly starts lighting up that yellow DSC symbol on the dash. First sign of snow, ice, or frost on the roads, and it gets tucked into the garage for the winter.

There are no 21" all season factory spec tires right now. I can't run summers year round and won't because they wear out after 10-12k miles. The factory size is 275/40R21 up front and 315/35R21 in the back. I believe the load range is XL for both tires. The rear tires are what make finding an all season option quite hard. You can of course go larger (wider) or more narrow but that will lead to your speedometer being off.

Dude, abide. It's no joke, performance run flats slide like hockey pucks on snow/ice. I had them on my A6 (quattro) and was shocked by a sudden snowstorm in Flagstaff, AZ when driving through and it was white knuckles for a few miles until it cleared out. All wheel drive is worthless when you're on summer times in snow or ice.

Do not try to drive performance summer tires in snow. You won't make it more than 50 feet even if you try.
This is why I went with the 20in standard M sport wheels. No all seasons available in 22 or even 21 I don't think. You need a full new set of tires and rims for winter alone. I didn't wanna deal with that garbage |

Just have some decent snow tires fitted and swap them back and forth either on the 21's or get some cheap 20's with snows to run in the winter, night and day difference even over all seasons in the winter.

I see the upcoming X7 comes with “21" Double-spoke bi-color orbit grey wheels, style 754M with all-season runflats”. There should be all season tires that fit on the 21” M-Sport wheels.

No necessarily. According to tirerack which is generally quite accurate the 21" X7 wheels are a square set up 285/45R21, only the 22" wheels are staggered.

There is exactly one all season tire that fits the 21” wheel. PIRELLI
SCORPION VERDE A/S. Pricy but that is what I will go with to have good looking wheels all year and no wheel swapping. I can get them locally 275/40/r21. 9.5”. $325 315/35/r21 10.5”. $555 https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires...XLN0&tab=Sizes https://www.tirerack.com/tires/BigPi...wall=Blackwall Last edited by MystroX5; 12-19-2018 at 02:29 PM.. |

You have to use it as there is literally only one AS tire that fits the 21’ wheel. 315/35/r21 10.5”. My issue is I drive from PA to FL in the winter and I don’t want snow tires in FL. I could live with a wheel swap around town for the season but not for long distance driving with a 70 degree temp change. I would love a Continental or Michelin option but no AS in 21 or 22 that will fit either M Sport wheels.

Yea, there is no optimum set up for every condition at this point. I am just glad there is at least something. Pretty sad this is all we got at this point but with many new large wheel SUV’s, I hope there will be more tire choices next year. 22”ers are totally screwed. I rather like the look of the M-Sport 20”ers but at this point I opened up the search for my dealer for 21”ers with other must have options I will not compromise on.

You likely need to run 20" wheels in the factory size or more narrow depending on your preference for winter tires. There's a rather long OP about this

I have experience with RFT 21" and conventional 21" ice/snow tires in the winter on and offroad with X5M. The non-rft performed much better and predictably. The RFT worked and got the job done but the rear would kick out a bit and all the nanny-features come in. The RFT were awful once you got off of tarmac and onto any real accumulation, grass or mud. Again, they worked and eventually hooked up but it was a chore in addition not something I want my wife to think about or concern herself with which was the original reason for getting RFT in case something happened should could drive until safe or where someone could assist her if I was not able but after experiencing the way they perform I decided to swap them out.
