New 2023 X5 xDrive45e Owner
Actually the title should read new BMW owner & new PHEV owner!
I've spent a some time reading a lot of posts on here trying to wrap my head around all of this new information. It's a lot! My current situation is my xDrive45e arrived around the same time we are remodeling our basement. Subsequently all of our basement stuff is in our garage for the next 3 months so we won't be able to park much less install a level 2 charger. I'm planning on charging the xDrive45e using the included cable plugged into our outdoor, GFCI outlet when I get home from work through the next morning when I leave for work. If the forecast calls for rain, I won't plug it in. We live in Virginia for what it's worth. Am I setting myself up for failure here? |

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on the BMW. Obviously it depends on your commute but the battery may not be fully charged ion the morning but you should be fine doing that until you get your charger installed.

While the EVSE shouldn't be submerged in water, it won't hurt it to get wet. I generally just push it under the vehicle or maybe there's room on top of the tire in the fender well.
The EVSE has built-in protection logic, so there's no safety issue. IOW, plug it in, don't worry about rain unless it pools. |

I can't get a Level 2 charger installed quite yet either so I just plug the EVSE cord into a garage outlet and run the cable under the garage door to the car. I do this whether it's 80F or if we're getting 6" of snow like last night. No problems.

I did that for a while. I was living in a townhouse and the garage was too small to fit the X5. The outdoor plug I used was under the front door's overhang, so the outlet and charging unit never got wet. If you don't have that option, your plan of not charging when it rains should be fine. It worked fine. It takes about 20 hours to go from empty to a full charge.

A outdoor plug should have some kind of water proof cover. And you can further make sure it is a in-use water proofing cover. Basically the cover is big enough to cover the receptacle with plug in it. If it isn’t already an in-use model, you should be able to replace it. So no need to worry about plug getting wet. The rest is evse should be rain proof
