Did the X5 45e get an increased battery charge? (US)
So I've started noticing on my 2023 X5 45e that it sometimes has a charge of 40 or more miles.
Previously it always had was 35. I know the battery itself can hold 50, but in the US, was limited. I had a software update recently, but can't find if it included a battery extension. Including a pic showing the charge with 48 miles. Previously the most I ever saw here was 35. What has changed, or am I missing something? |

So nothing to do with the limit on the battery in the US? Good to know.
I had thought there was some software limit that limited it to 80% of it's max. It's certainly warmer now. Winter here is usually in the 10 -40s |

the U.S. 45e usable capacity was and still is 71% of the full capacity (17.1kWh of 24kWh). some have increased the capacity to 21.6kWh (EU spec) on their own using coding software or performed by Mission Tuning |

FWIW, a study with the i3 found that running with the a/c off and windows open to get some air in the thing was LESS efficient above 25-mph than running the a/c with the windows closed because of the increased drag caused by the open windows...so, keep that in mind. While it might feel good to have the air blowing in your face through an open window, you likely aren't saving anything.

Heating, as opposed to cooling on the PHEV, is a bigger energy hog than cooling. Just putting out that i3 study tidbit for those that think they're saving energy by running around with their windows open and the a/c off. YOu're not saving energy.

I also recently saw my EV range suddenly increased up to 50 miles range from about 35miles last week. It’s was this warm (70-80f) for the last 2 months, and I didn’t see an update as well, wondering why.

same reply from other thread: "that higher electric range upon full charge is simply a reflection of efficient driving prior to charging. it sounds like you had a decent amount of hill descents on your recent road trip there in the PNW. such features play in your favor. to actually achieve those 50 electric miles, you'd have to drive exactly the same way as you did prior to charging. otherwise, it's the typical 30ish miles"

Just like an ICE's miles to empty can vary by a huge amount, so can the EV maximum range. I've had my 45e report over 500miles of combined range after a long road trip that quickly degenerated to about 400-miles after returning to my more common, local trips around town.
The estimate is based on the last 18-miles of use and assumes your next miles will be identical, which almost never happens. So, take it with a grain of salt and gain some real-world experience so you have a better idea of what's possible. |
