The 'Green Hell' and why there is no German GP
Who wouldn't want to take their M car on the Nordschleife, the longest and most challenging race track on earth.

The Green Hell is always extremely tricky , also because of some other drivers who run as if in a suicide mission ! The Green Hell can knock you and your car out at any moment..' Even 'inexperienced drivers become 'overconfident after a few laps ! And that's what hits you my friend (as you can see)! There is a vid earlier with these f* maniacs braking too late and skidding into other cars that have stopped ! The guy who got out of his car to flag down others waving his arms was ignored and someone side swiped his parked car... just should have continued to get past the scene to save his car The Green Hell where many drivers and bikers have perished, it's probably safer to just watch from the side. |

^^ Same mistake over and over from the newbies...they switch their traction off and go into sport + mode with everything, that is a recipe for an instant off, look at 3:56

Them and the Golf GTI's with the short wheel base step out at the slightest provocation ready to dance. They'd go faster and safer with all the safety systems switched back on, the 911's look decidedly twitchy too as the drivers try to 'slow in and fast out' but simply give TOO MUCH WOT on exit

Lauda tried to get the '76 GP at the Nordschleif boycotted because of a lack of safety equipment and safety crews, such as too few fire trucks and trackside first aid.
Ironically he was outvoted by the others and suffered that near death fiery crash after suspension failure caused by a modified part, with drivers and other helpers struggling to put the fire out it was Artur Merzario who was at the scene that undid the fiddly six point seat belts anchor and somehow dragged Lauda out saving his life. I thought about it to but if I did it would be in any M car except mine.
If you do crash and cause damage to armco and/or other cars and the car you are in getting a breakdown truck stopping the session it'll come at a cost to you. |

I'm not sure if there is a damage waiver when you use one of the Nordschleif's own vehicles, somehow I'm guessing not.
There seems to be quite a choice if you decide to go for a track rental car as with some shown in the vid, what I was saying about crashes there's one at the end which will cost the driver and its a 3 series.. Ough! Last edited by M5Rick; 02-28-2024 at 04:41 AM.. |

It's as I suspected and of course no renter in their right mind would entertain a damage waiver with these type of high risk sessions. I know calling out the flat loader recovery truck with the track stoppage will cost the errant driver an arm and a leg as a starter never mind the other damage costs to come.

Touristenfahrten isn't a track day... it's a public toll road. There's no signing up for anything. Throw some cash on your lap card and off you go! For newbies, I highly recommend NOT GOING anywhere near the 'Ring on a weekend during the summer. Your best bet is early in the season during the week or late in the season during the week and/or early on the weekend. Tourist Drive sessions have gotten insane over the last decade... hell, from what I hear, actual organized track days (cost upwards of 1000 EUR or more) are almost just as bad as far as the clientele goes. YouTube and videogames have really done a number on that place... As for the German GP, as well as the European GP - they ran them a handful of times on the GP course. The only reason they don't have it now is that the current ownership doesn't want to pay the exorbitant fees. I guess the same goes for Hockenheim. Honestly, F1 can pound sand. The VLN/NLS/N24 are so much better in the fact that tickets are affordable and you pretty much have full access to everything. I'll take SP3 cars all day long... not to mention all the random classes/series and one-off cars (Opel Manta!). |
