just got an sos malfunction on the dash

Looking at various bmw forums this looks to be a common problem with the SOS failure message on cars 3 years or older .The main cause seams to be the failure of the sos battery backup. The location of the battery is located above the head lining near the rear of the vehicle. Has anybody tried to replace the battery as I can only assume it would be difficult to get at. Also has anybody had the dealer do the work and if so what’s the cost.

To be honest I am not that bothered about the system not working but hate having error messages on the dash
