Pop Quiz

What’s this doing on my passenger seat?

Crankshaft pulley sheared off yesterday, recovery mechanic said he’d never seen anything like it. Car now off to the dealer, hopefully not for too long.

4000 miles!

Ouch! But some components can and do fail very early (phenomenon known as infant mortality in electronics), and it is good news that the mechanic hasn't seen this happen before.

3.0D M Sport.

Good news is the dealer says the car will be ready on Tuesday. Until then I’m thrashing round in a brand new 3 series.

Can you share the story of how it happened? Were you just driving around and hear a bang and get warning lights?

Sat in traffic for about 5 minutes, I heard a faint ‘thud’ and then nothing else.

A stop message came up, then a steering message(!) and then I saw the temperature rising and thought I’d best get to the side of the road.

Six hours later, I got home!

Got the car back yesterday. New crankshaft pulley and belt.

Apparently mine wasn’t the first they’d seen.

Did the dealer tell you that yours wasn't the first one they have seen? Any idea why it failed?

No idea why it failed but they mentioned another one had been in with the same fault the previous week.

I asked them if there were others and he went a bit vague. I’m not sure what the part looked like before it failed. I’m hoping it’s a fluke.

That's not good. Is this same pulley used on gasoline engines I wonder??

That pic looks like a casting error of the part or maybe way over torqued bolts?

The middle is hard rubber. I’m assuming there is some kind of spigot in the middle and that is what has sheared off/out.

I’d imagine that centre would steel.
