Thank you...seems with the turbos, a sea level time would be in a range of 3.95 to 4.00 seconds.

At sea level the M50i is going to be in the 3.88 second range 0-60. I broke under 4 seconds last year with my 50i M-Sport at 3.97 seconds 0-60mph (no launch control). I tested at 520ft above sea level. I can do 4.1 seconds all day long just by mashing the gas. My wife (which knows nothing of this) was given a attempt and she got a 4.3 her first time trying. Temperature, humidity and sea level are all important factors. Make sure your tire pressures is also maxed out as it makes a difference. Do your runs with less than 1/4 tank of gas. BMW is very conservative with their performance numbers. Almost anyone in any condition can surely beat the factory performance spec.

The efficiency of the transmission and how the power is put down is a huge factor in performance and BMW is a masters at this. This little nugget of information is seldom brought up in performance talks.

This is what kills me with today’s lazy “so-called” automotive press that reads off specs to gauge a car’s performance instead of actually testing it.

Both M50i and 50i M-Sport are under 4 second SUV’s. The M50i should easily do it almost every time in lower altitudes.

Sorry if this is a dumb question, but if you're not using launch control, what other technique is there for doing a 0-60 run other than just "mashing the gas"?

Loading the brake up while using the accelerator pedal. You will find many of us got out best times by this. There is a long thread on this from last fall.

The launch control will give you very consistent launches but have shown not always the fastest. There is a lot going on trying to put the power down.
It would be interesting to test launches in the rain with and without launch control and see if it isn’t faster. Having enough HP is not the issue any more. We already have more than enough for a muscle/luxury SUV. The struggle is putting it down. Light to light racing the X5 will crush most rwd sport/muscle cars. It will absolutely embarrass them. . We had a long thread on this showing many high power cars like the Hellcat struggling to get a under 5 second 0-60 because they can’t put the power down even in good conditions.

I expect the new X5M to be a strait out stealth predator to traditional exotic sport cars.

Yep - I'll try both ways. I have a draggy. Been waiting until after break in period to do any test runs. Now that has come and gone, I just need to find a nice strip where I can turn her loose w/o fear of being nabbed by a cop.

I have done this for years and there are some tricks I learned with my RS4 back in the day to get those last few tenths out. The same tricks worked with my C4S and every other performance AWD car.

Go out with less than 1/4 tank of gas. Anytime I see reports on this forum, my first question is how much gas did you have in the tank. 1/2 or more in the tank then you are carrying too much extra weight. Make sure that gas is high quality. I am a Sunoco Ultra fan. Get those tires inflated rock hard. Monitor the humidity and temp.

You are going to blow by 60mph so fast in your car I bet you will be doing 100mph runs. just saying.

These are the C&D test results for the M50i

It's a seriously fast car. I think what's most shocking to me is it's practically as quick as my M340i, which happens to weigh 1,500 lbs less

Thanks for the info. My 2016 X5 50i hit 4.2 to 4.30 consistently. I'm trying to get a sense of real world numbers. I'm going from X3M back to X5. C&D has impressive numbers but on the majority are not replicable in normal conditions.

If I can do 4 flat consistently, I will be happy.

Somewhat off topic but why are going from the X3M to an X5?

It's a little but of a lengthy saga but basically I like the size of the X5 and how I feel driving it. Thought, the nex X5 is much bigger to drive than the outgoing F15.

I traded my '16 X5 50i with 77k miles for a 2019 X5 40i build. After the 1st day, there was an issue with drivetrain. BMW and dealership were very proactive and in short time, I had a 2020 X5 40i build (should have just gone into M50 then). I was able to trade that in for a X3M build without getting hurt. In fact, their MSRP's were only different by 150 (79,845 vs 79,995) and my payment on the X3M was 20 less a month. Buy, not lease. I went to X3M because I missed the power and wanted the X3M.

I drive a lot and I realized the X3M isn't as comfortable for me on my long drives. No issues with ride, it seems as it had softened. For me it's the sport seats, a bit narrow for me and the car is dying to be driven fast....all the time. It's an amazing suv.

So after having the new X5, I know what I am missing in the size and a bit of luxury. Discussed the new X5M with dealership but I think it will be a bigger, meaner and angry suv that just wants run and not a the daily driver for me.

I was luck to lock in a great trade in January before the rebates on the 2020 X3M increase 2fold and the 2021 go into production.

Probably sounds crazy but it is what it is for me. lol

Nah, it all makes sense. Thank you for your perspective. I ask because the X3M, M550i and now the X5 M50i are candidates for my next vehicle. Just trying to collect people's thoughts.

I test drove the X3M a couple of times and found the ride to be ok. Not a demerit per se, but certainly not a "pro" in the pro/con analysis. My hangups with the X5 M50i are cost and I already have an X7 so I wonder if it will be too similar.

If I can give you my opinion...with having a X7 in the stable, I would would look very hard at the M550.
I test drove the M550i a lot, loved it, with right options. Exhaust note in sport plus was best out of those 3.
I don't have room for a 3rd car, mine and my daughter's, if I did, I would have a car but I like sitting up higher on the highway...so suv.
The rebates on the M550i are significant and the discounts to match. Not sure what the LCI for 2021 will look like.
The X3M would be good if you want to hit a track day every now and then.
The M550i is a true sleeper.

I don't disagree with any of what you said. I will add that I'm not sure whether the M550i is quicker than the X3M at full tilt but it certainly feels quicker in everyday use on account of its vastly superior low end torque.

My hangups with the M550i are mostly practical in nature - I do a decent amount of city driving and those 20 inch wheels with rubberbands for tires (I don't like the 19 inch wheels) are going to leave me with multiple blowouts. Also have some concerns about how low the car sits. I used to have an Infiniti Q50 Red Sport that I would bottom out regularly on the inclines and driveways that I encounter and I believe the M550i sits even lower.

Finally, I like the looks of the M550i the least (though I think it is ok).

I agree on the 19's...only good for winter on the M550i, if even then.
I have heard of blow outs on the 20's but never meet anyone that actually had one but I would hate to deal with it.
I quickly spec'ed out one similar to my M50i build...was only less by 6k. So not that much of a difference.
Dynamic handling is a must or at least for me coming out of the X3M.
The M550i felt faster to me.
If you dont need or desire live cockpit and ID7, the X3M will be on huge discount in March and April. 11% discount and $5500 (if not more) discount for buy.

I am going to test the Dragy on an M50i tomorrow as I am attending a BMW'S launch of the new 2 series 4 door.

Also, the X5 M50i will have 2 additional interior options starting with April builds. At some point, they will allow M Sport seats like you can order on over seas spec'ed builds. That might be for 2021 MY

No not yet. It's been raining for what seems like all year down here so haven't had a good day to try it

Sorry about the rain. Definitely interested in getting an idea of what I might be giving up. M50 build looks to be done with build by weeks end.

I'm not going to comment on wheels/tires since that seems to be very dependent on driver and location but the ride height of the M550i surprised me. Going from a 'standard' F10 535dx to the M550i I was expecting more scrapes approaching steep driveways or inclines but I haven't. The higher riding F10 had more issues because of the softer suspension. Note that I wouldn't mind a bit more firm spring rate not he M550i. We have steep hills in the city of Seattle with sharp breaks and I haven't had problems with the bottom scraping either although there where times I felt I came VERY close. That said, my lease is up in April and the LCI G30 won't start production until later in the Summer so I'm looking at the X5 M50i as well although that would make us a two X5 household and I'm not sure how I feel about that.
