nifty new trick discovered: ASS turns engine on when the car in front drives off!

in my F15, ASS (auto start/stop) turned the engine off and it stayed off, unless the A/C or some other vehicle system required the engine to be on. But I kept noticing for the last several days that the ASS would turn my engine back on at seemingly random intervals. These would happen during extended traffic stops, the engine was otherwise warm and the A/C was off, so there's no reason for it to turn the engine back on. then I noticed that it kept doing that whenever the car in front of me would take off. Sure enough, its documented in the manual under "intelligent ASS". a very cool yet subtle new feature.

yes i intentionally said ASS a lot.

If it does it nine times in a row, I guess you could call it ASS-a-nine

Also, if you use the driving aid for start/stop traffic, you can let the steering wheel go, and it'll beep at you as soon as the car in front starts moving, after restarting the engine and following it, if you are not paying attention.

^ It could be a difference in versions/countries but here if that situation occurs it will start the engine but not follow the car in front until your eyes are on the road.

how do you do this? Do you mean using distance control CC, or driver assistant CC? I tried driver assistant in the city and it wasn't very good, it kept veering when there were breaks in the lanes at intersections and stuff. I tried distance control, and even that didn't work at like stop signs and stuff so I just drive regularly on city roads.

I use driver assistant (lane centering steering) a lot with confidence. Yes, you have to pay attention for occasional mistakes, but it's better than paying close attention all the time.

I find distance control (adaptive cruise control) to work flawlessly in traffic as it's designed to do. It's not designed to stop for signs, just to maintain a safe distance to the vehicle in front.

I use it (cruise with steering/lane control) close to 100% of the time I’m driving no matter whether the road is rural, highway or city. It works extremely well in all instances. You just need to use it to get used to how it operates and it takes a lot of stress out of driving and makes it safer.

Have you noticed that it sometimes (when i use it in city driving) hard brakes (with sometimes a RED Car Warning sign on the dash board)? It freaks me out and I hit the brakes instead. However, most of the times it stops smoothly (very precisely). Don't know if my car's radar/cams need a calibration?!

No, thankfully I have not experienced that. You may want to have them check it, maybe there is some type of diagnostic they can run.

Yes I have noted it, most of the times it happens when a car from other lane moves into your lane, or a parked car/bus starts moving and slowly drifts into your lane or car in front of you applies a sudden brake...

Yes but in your case there was a reason for the braking, wasn't FreddyBMW implying there were no cars around to cause it? Or did I just read that into what he was describing?

Just got home from another successful cross-San Francisco commute using driver assistant to let me browse Bimmerforums the whole time 😇

did I just get lucky or did I discover another nifty feature

i didn't want to start another new thread but:

I was driving home from my friends house today a few minutes ago and his subdivision is really quite dark. I turned on the car and the low beams came on, I always also turn on the fog lights out of habit (also did so on the F15, idk why BMW refuses to couple the fog lights on with the regular low beams but w/e). Anyway i was driving at a moderate speed out of his cul de sac and the highbeams flashed, twice. And I immediately saw 2 or 3 of his neighbors cross the street in front of me. Maybe I would have noticed them regardless but it was pitch black before that, i had no clue they were in the road.

I know the eurospec lights are supposed to identify pedestrians and such, but I didn't think ours did? was this a fluke? I know I was driving under 30mph so the laser highbeams shouldn't have kicked on, but it flashed to 'light up' the pedestrians nonetheless. One time I can understand, but twice, in succession? was this a feature or a bug or just my imagination?

I'm hoping that was a feature, because that's really really REALLY cool.
