are used car dealers moving on price?

was working on a car i liked.. '21 with 16k miles on it. listed at 83K, call in they quickly throw in that they "require" a ceramic coat and door edge PPF for $1K (queue eye roll), and then would only come down the $1K that they snuck in past their advertised price.

BMW dealer, reasonable online reputation. Move on, or is that the current state of play?

Paid less than that for a CPO with most options. Did get stuck for a reconditioning fee of $900 and some window VIN etching for $200. Life is short so I let it go. Didn't think I'd find another with the ivory and blue interior for a while...

yeah, was planning on given the really obnoxious used car sales tactic of hidden fee + discount in that amount, just wanted to understand if all of them are holding firm or if this is the exception.

I did discover when I traded in my Defender on a new X5M build that the price you get on KBB's website is a good bit behind what they dealer gets on their website. It was about $5K less based on current inventory, so I would imagine that you could get more off the asking price of a used vehicle. With sales volumes way down I see no reason to pay for extra services that you don't want, I don't see how they can still get away with this.

We stopped negotiating, and dealers are taking advantage of it!
Negotiate and don't pay any of the dealer-added fees!

There is not enough pain, yet! Dealerships are still well capitalized and able to maintain incoming inventory...

Like any leveraged market, at some point they will have to start cutting deals or face the bankers...the only questions is when and of course that will vary by local markets....

Curious. Did your Defender develop issues worth disposing of the vehicle?

X5M: perhaps the pinnacle of well priced, performance SUVs. Congrats!

It is a complete POS. The 3d time I drove it the engine died, it spent a month in the shop waiting for parts. Then about 6 month ago there was a coolant leak. They repaired it but now it is back. It takes 2 months to get a service appointment with a loaner car, so I decided to trade it in and go back to BMW. And something like 10 of the dealerships technicians quit on the same day, so I was warned that the guys they hired as replacements do not know what they are doing.

This seems to be the norm (at least with BMW dealers now).

Unfortunately for rarer vehicles with a specific spec or options requirements, you're kinda stuck playing their games or you don't get your car. It's way easier to walk and go to the next dealer on a Toyota Corolla than it is on a vehicle with as many individual.options and choices as an X5.

At the end of the day, they'll find their buyer even with their games right now. So you can be grumpy about it and miss out on the car you want, or you can swallow your pride and get your car.
