BMW X5 45E Custom Order Help (Dealer v. Dealer)

Hello folks — need some help with a bit of a tricky situation. Also a newbie to BMWs and this thread so might just be tricky in mind.

So here's the tl;dr — I placed a custom order for a MY21 BMW X5 45E a little over a month ago at a large BMW dealership here in South Florida but, like most folks, we've been struggling to get a production number, likely because they didn't have an allocation... as many on this thread have suggested, I reached out to other dealerships, and another dealer has come back with a super competitive offer, but still no allocation or firm production date.

Here are the details on the car:
  • MY21 BMW X5 45E
  • M Sport Package + Brake Calipers
  • HK Audio
  • Executive Package
  • Luxury Seating Package
  • Parking Assistance Package
  • Driving Assistance Package

Here's the pricing info from Dealer #1 (bigger volume dealership where I currently have a deposit from ~1 month ago):
  • MSRP: $78,345
  • + Doc Fees, Title, Registration, Misc. Fees: $81,245
  • Rebates & Incentives: $3000
  • BMW Select: $971 for 60 mos.
  • Final Price: $89,305.00

Here's the pricing info from Dealer #2 (lower volume dealership where I'd have to put down a new deposit):
  • MSRP: $78,345
  • + Doc Fees, Title, Registration, Misc. Fees: $81,245
  • Rebates & Incentives: $6500
  • BMW Select: $910 for 60 mos.
  • Final Price: $83,161.45

* Updated with accurate MSRP, fees etc.

On paper alone Dealer #2's offer sounds compelling but I'm wary of switching this so late in the game since (A) I've been reading about parts shortages / cancellations already, (B) I don't want to end up at the beginning of the line, and (C) does this hurt relationship with BMW overall?

Sorry for long post, but welcome the help.

So, step #1 - you can strike HK Audio from your build if you don't have a VIN right now.

Ask me how I know.

And step #2 - I'm confused with the different MSRPs and rebates. Those should be constants to effectively evaluate the two offers.

In terms of being wary about switching, if your original order still lacks a Production Number, you pretty much are on a wish list.

Ask for the week of production; if you cannot get one, or if there isn't one, it really makes no difference if you create a different order tomorrow.

You could also ask the dealer with your current order to match the terms.

As mentioned, it looks like you are comparing two different builds. Even with that, Dealer #2 seems to be offering a much better deal by over $6k but I would be leery of those numbers.

The first thing you should do is ignore the monthly payment, that really will just confuse things for you since that can be manipulated. In order to evaluate both deals and compare to see which one to go with you want to get the following:

MSRP
Dealer Discount
Incentives
Doc Fees
Gov't Fees
Other Fees
Taxes
Finance Rate

Once you have the above you can calculate how much you need/want to put down and what your payment will be.

As far as making a change now, you have nothing to lose. You dealer doesn't have an allocation and who knows when they will. Someone posted the other day that their dealer told them they won't be getting anymore 45e allocations until Fall. I personally find that hard to believe but you never know.

Re: different MSRPs, they’re the same — just looking at different docs (one with taxes and fees, the other without).

Based on above, Dealer #2 is by far the better “deal” once I consider the variables but I’m also generally worried about timing.

Does it make more/less sense to roll my order in to the MY22s where some of the items like HK might be back?

The MSRP does not include doc fees, taxes etc. It is the price set by BMW.

You can't roll it into MY22 since pricing and options could be different. You would need to cancel this order and start the process over again.

As TurtleBoy commented, you can't roll your order to MY22 and you'd need to start over:

1. MY22 ordering and pricing guides aren't available, no one knows if there are package, options or price changes

2. MY22 production slots aren't open yet and you wouldn't be able to place an order for MY22 until mid-July

3. MY22 production doesn't start until late August or early September

Re: MY22 -- there is no guarantee the missing options will be available just because it's a new production year.

Supply chain is causing this to happen, and it doesn't care that a new model year is on the horizon. It will fix itself when it fixes itself, and a lot of articles on the topic suggest this won't be until Q4, if not early 2022 sometime.

Re: MSRP, you’re right and upon further gut check, it’s the same at both dealers.

This is great insight - Dealer #1 has been trying to convince me that if we’re not able to get all desired options or if allocation doesn’t arrive in time, my order would “roll over” into a MY22 automatically.

I assumed this was a bit misleading at best.

OP you have a terrible deal. The dealer flat out just gave you Incentives without any discount.

No HK and limited M sport availability. Good luck with the build. I suggest. Wait for MY 22. Then find a dealer that will give you Invoice and Incentives together. Get at least 10% off MSRP. Good luck hunting.. Also Leasing is Bad right now with BMW accdg to my friend who is a sales manager.

Tough to get any discounts on 45Es these days with supply chain limitations…

I talked to my friend who is a sales manager. It sucks that you are far from MA. He couldve gotten you a July allocation. But he said he wouldnt do out of state coz its pretty much in demand in MA and they sold out their allocations right away.
