Hello,
I have a 2024 X5 xdrive40i. It has iDrive 8.5. I am trying to get Waze, when I am using it from android auto, to display the turn by turn directions in the HUD.
It works on the main screen in front of driver as well as on the big screen in the middle. I found some option once which put it on the HUD, but I didn't save it and now I cannot figure out how to do it again.

Yes, I just cant find the way to do it inside that menu group.

Are you using an iPhone? If you are, waze doesn’t show up on the HUD, only when using android auto.

It should be something that can be done... I feel like it worked once and then can't replicate it.

I’ve read updating some software (sorry, I don’t remember the name) in the Google Store can restore compatibility/connection…

also, have you searched other threads on this subject here? the software is mentioned in one of those threads

I have the same problem on mine.
Google maps works but not Waze, i also get error message that maps did not load properly if i start the car with Waze selected.
Not a terrible issue, but definitely an annoyance.

what version do you have? it works on iDrive 7, too

there are older threads that go into more specifics; just search for them, but if I recall:

- iPhone + CarPlay shows Apple Maps in HUD
- Android device + Android Auto shows Google Maps/Waze in HUD

Haha, I'm reading through old threads, currently on page 9. There was lots of discussion about what Os and what App were visible in the HUD, but not what iDrive - I guess that never came up because it's applicable to all of them.

Based on what I'm reading in said threads, your memory seems correct.

Waze was super buggy for me with Android Auto. I finally stopped using it and believe there are some compatibility issues.

Did not know this also worked with 7 -- I gotta look into that. Guess I have to re-read TFM..

I still haven't been able to get waze to show up in the hud. It's frustrating because I rented a 2022 x5 and it worked no problem. But now that I bought a 2024 x5, I cannot get it to work!
Is there some kinda setting that I am missing to get it to work?

I've just read in another forum that there's a navigation app called Magic Earth that supports navigation instructions in HUD in iOS and wanted to try it. Because if it worked - that would mean that it's technically possible and Google just don't want to implement it in their apps. Having installed and tried the app, nothing was displayed in my HUD. after reading your post, i tested this morning. i recently updated vehicle software to 11/2023.50 a few days ago, and my iPhone 14 Pro was running iOS 17.3.1. i can confirm Apple Maps showed directional arrows on the HUD

i then updated to iOS 17.4 and can also confirm Apple Maps shows directional arrows on the HUD.

did you reboot iDrive?

Many thanks for trying that out! And yes, total beginner’s mistake! As soon as I’ve restarted iDrive - Apple Maps directions are back in HUD. And the other app still doesn’t display anything. So I’m no closer to understanding whose limitation that is - Apple’s or Google’s.

did you watch this video? Magic Earth doesn't have integration with BMW's HUD in the same way Apple Maps does with iPhones and CarPlay or Google Maps with Androids which would make sense cuz that would involve collaboration with Apple, Google/Android and BMW.

its "HUD mode" simply displays the GPS data backwards on the phone's display making its reflection on the front windshield the correction orientation

I have explored their UI extensively trying to find at least some hint at HUD in CarPlay. I’ve found the function you’ve mentioned and perhaps that’s the thing that confused me in the first. Because I’ve read somewhere on Reddit where someone asked about Waze and HUD in CarPlay and someone else responded with “only Apple Maps can do that” and this person said “Magic Earth can do it to”. Ah well, false alarm I guess.
