Starting out with coding

Hi Folks,

New to everything here. Looking to tinker with coding via Bimmercode (small time really) but I'm seeing that many settings are only changable when using an OBD adapter chosen from a specific list of adapters. Is there an OBD adapter that works with the majority of Bimmercode settings, if not all? Any you folks recommend?

Many thanks in advance-

Greg

Highly recommend you use a wired ENET adapter. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07V3C47YD/

Then depending on what type of device you are using ... iPhone, Android, etc you will probably need a USB to Ethernet dongle for the USB-C or Lightning to Ethernet.

Example for USB-C which works with iPhone 15 and many Android

The Bimmercode site has a list of supported adapters. Many just go wot with the OBDLink CX since it is made for Bimmercode.

Thanks to you both! I'm using a Pixel 8 Pro so I'm Android.

WiFi works, as does BT, but Ethernet is faster.

Don't know that speed will matter much to me in the beginning. I'm only changing small time stuff at the onset ... disabling start/stop, 5 blink directionals, etc. Getting a bit nervous though, about the warranty problem I may create for myself...

If you stick to the menu options and not fool around in Expert mode it would be almost impossible for you to do anything that would affect your warranty. That said, you have be comfortable with what you are doing so if there are any doubts just skip it.

Go with the e-net adapter plus a usb-c to ethernet dongle. As others have mentioned, it's much faster and also cheaper than Bluetooth. And it will work with the laptop, if you decide to code that way someday.

Trust me, the speed matters. Bimmercode makes backups up the modules every time you connect to the vehicle. The wired ENET is orders of magnitude faster. We are talking minutes versus few seconds.

let’s not overexaggerate here. while ENET and wifi are faster than bluetooth, coding doesn’t take minutes even with multiple items on one module compared to the former methods… likely 20-30 seconds longer. sure, if you spread that over multiple modules, then a bluetooth coding session could take several minutes longer than a wifi/ENET session which will still be a few minutes itself

that said, bluetooth is slow for my liking. I used to use the CX but now use the MHD Black

It's the initial connection and backup of all the modules that takes a while. Especially if you have a highly optioned vehicle. It's very fast over wired and bluetooth is horrendous. Subsequently coding a single module isn't bad but still slower nonetheless. I have MANY of those wifi, bluetooth and wired adapters on the list so trust me, I know. Unless you're planning on leaving the wireless type adapters in the vehicle console and worried about space, I don't see a point in using them over wired especially if you're going to buy new versus repurposing something you already have from another vehicle.

Exactly. It's the initial loading when you first get into a module that takes much longer time on Bluetooth. I got a BT module initially but returned it when I found out that the ENET cable that I bought for my 535i still worked. The difference is day and night.

A follow-up and thanks to all who posted here. I took the dive, got a CX OBD and jumped into light coding today. Major bummed to see I can't kill auto start/stop though .. running 11/2023.50 now, which I understand blocks it. ARG.

Thanks again to all on the thread.

A somewhat of a workaround for the ASS, is to make Sport Individual your default driving mode via Beamercode and set all the settings in Sport Individual to comfort or whatever you want them to be. This way, the ASS will always be off when you start the vehicle.
