Chip shortage

You may not be able to read this WSJ story due to firewalls...but the quickie is that VW Group is one of the many manufacturers saying that the shortage is in fact getting worse, and not better. BMW said they are producing 30k few cars this year (out of how many?) and that their earlier estimates are optimistic. Hopefully, by MY23 things will be better (my guess/hope).

Glad I am sitting out this market. It is a bloodbath.

Options are getting cut left and right and often times without clear warning. Then you have dealers holding you up by the balls and changing terms under your feet since by the time your order is coming in they might find a more thirsty buyer. Just brutal.

I think it will be 2024 or 2025 for this to fully settle back to normal.

Back in the Spring the CEO of BMWAG said that things would be back into balance within two years at the latest. I was hoping he was being overly pessimistic but that may not be the case.

I thank my lucky stars that my order went in literally a couple of weeks before this became an issue. I had no inkling this would become a problem.

My friend is higher up in the VW regional service department for the North East. Yesterday he says it will be 1.5 years before anything gets back to normal for them. Think 2024 area.

My dealer made me a cash offer to buy outright my 2019 M2C and my 2020 X7M50i that is unbelievably high even for today’s standards (above msrp). My X7 isn’t going anywhere simply because there is nothing higher to go as it is maxed out with every option BMW ever had in 2020 and I “need” this vehicle. My M2C might be going. I may look at a M8c or 991 GT3, AMG GTc coupe, etc…. There is a lot of possibilities in the $140k-$165k range and the money is stupid high on my M2C.

Too bad our domestic micro processor industry does not have the capacity for us to be self sufficient in this vital area. Lesson learned, is government listening?
Good thing we are now energy independent, wait, that's right we were, not any more. Who needs those terrible pipelines?

I’m in Sydney, just took delivery of my well optioned X5. When I was picking up my car the dealer was telling me 8month wait and 7 seater x5 is not possible. New x5s won’t have m sports and a whole raft of options which I took delivery off.

At least it’s good for resale value.

And I'm the idiot that sold my beautiful, tuned, 6 speed manual, Audi S4 (100k miles) in Jan (not driving to work)....thinking I'd be getting a wonderful X5 this Sept....with all the options.

What a fool I was. Anyone want a stock tip? Buy high..sell low.

So glad I bought out the lease on our fully loaded 2019. Getting a similarly equipped new replacement would be impossible especially at a good discount. The world's logistics is kinda screwed up for sure.

I would also assume no LCI update until mid- June 2023 or even 2024 at best. I’m very happy about that.

So far it seems the schedule for the LCI has not changed. It is scheduled to begin production 4/23 as a MY24.

What does the chip shortage mean to you the consumer and BMW the manufacturer. That is what matters most….

Here is the impact to BMW posted yesterday (yes I was right)…

Chip glut now?

Not good at all. Some buyers leaving the market because they can’t find a car they want, others paying ridiculous premiums to get one. No end in sight either.....

Thanks for the article link.
