Time For Hands Off Wheel
It appears my time of hands off wheel has shortened to 10 seconds the 5 seconds yellow the 5 seconds red. My wife's E450 MB is much longer.
Did something change?? |

I really dont see the point in this feature if you have the keep your hands on the wheel. Makes no sense. That's like the distance control asking you to keep your foot on the brake.

I've always wondered. Does it require two hands on the wheel or just one? I usually drive with my left hand at the 7 o'clock position loosely holding the wheel, does that suffice? I don't know anybody that drives with their hands at the 10 and 2 position, except for people getting their drivers license.

Just touch it with one finger or your knee.

I think the time required varies depending on driving conditions. When I'm in stop and go traffic going less than 25 mph I can keep my hands off the wheel for a long time. If I'm on the highway with no traffic, not so much.

At least, it can make sure the driver hasn't fallen asleep or watching a movie or whatever

As others have mentioned, there isn't a timer for hands-free operation. If the assisted driving mode isn't able to ascertain driver attention, road markings, other functional requirements that are covered in the owner's manual or digital Driver's guide, then it's going to prompt for hands-on the steering wheel.

It's more likely that the system will disengage due to hazard e.g. poor road markings, than the HOD tripping, and that's actually what interrupts the system. |

I don't get the people who complain about having to keep 1 finger, not even hand, 1 finger on the steering wheel when the active cruise control is doing it's thing. Have you NEVER had something run in front of you, or realize the car in front of you just swerved around a hazard on the road, or BMW suddenly decided to follow the asphalt patch instead of actual lanes?
BMW still does not require you keep your hands on the wheel with stop and go traffic which is limited to 40mph, where slower reaction time is allowed due to slower speed, but going down the highway 70+ and you don't want to touch the steering wheel? Maybe let the wife drive next time?
