Ecu swap for tune

I wanted to know first of all if it is even possible for instance if you able to buy exact same ecu's that car came with and put a tune in those ecu's and keep oem ones if ever needed for warranty or dealer visits?

It is fairly easy to swap ecu but Donno if this can work without voiding warranty n if it is possible then what would be the cost associated with it?

In technicality, yes, it is possible. But, I would get the new ECU to be flashed while keeping the original ECU untouched.
The only issue, BMW will still be able to catch you since I believe, odometer reading are also stored in the ECU besides the cluster.
So, when you swap back to stock, the odometer reading in the ECU and in your cluster will be 2 different reading.

I believe the odometer is actually stored on the control unit for dash, and verified within the ECU and will show an error. This of course if they are anything like the past few vehicles I've messed with.... The dealer will know due to the unique address assigned to each ECU unit. (mac address)

You can do as you are wanting but you will want to flash copy the OEM to the new or it will not work. Dealer can actually do this or the tuner. For what its worth you cannot do this without the vehicle and just on a bench. You have to initialize the new ECU's to the vehicle control units as well, it's a long process but I've seen it done on salvaged titles. Mother BMW can sell you a unit based on your vin but needs the same process since it will not come with exact match. Don't know what year you are asking about for sure but I'd bet some of the new locked Bosch ECU's require a bit more.

Thanks for the reply guys so it's not as easy as I thought and may not be worth it anyway due to odometer discrepancy. I just had a thought & wanted to know science behind this lol

Great question honestly, back in the day it was dip switch settings to swap. lol I had a couple ECU's for a old track car of mine. Now the communication is actually back and forth to many units all over the car, making it much more of a software level problem sadly.....
