They're gonna put ads into iDrive

Quote:
Preparation for contextual recommendations in the navigation system

The upgrade prepares for the technical capability of your infotainment system to display personalized and contextual recommendations from selected third-party providers as well as offers from BMW in the future as part of potential new services from BMW based on route planning, current location and vehicle data. The upgrade also includes preparation for the associated enabling of the online-capable search function of your navigation system.
They're gonna put ads into the iDrive navigation system.

(In case you didn't get it: "personalized and contextual recommendations from selected third-party providers" is marketing speak for "ad")

If you don't use the My BMW app, you can code the vehicle to completely disable its onboard SIM card - that'll kill the car's internet connection, so it won't be able to fetch any ads from BMW servers, or send any of your info to the mothership. I haven't yet set up BimmerUtility to be able to do advanced coding on my car, but disabling the SIM card has been on my to-do list for a while.

Edit: Forgot to mention, it also disables the SOS functionality. Thanks for the reminder nZtiZia.

If you do end up getting ads in the future, you could do a factory reset in iDrive to clear any already-downloaded saved ads off the car, and then disable the SIM card to prevent it from fetching more ads from BMW servers.

by disabling the SIM card, one also jeopardizes the SOS system whether triggered manually or automatically in the event of an accident.

not worth it just to disable ads

Disabling the SIM is a bad idea since in addition to the SOS mentioned above, you will lose apps and services and maps updates, real-time traffic, dynamic routing, etc. Also no need to do it as you will have the option to opt out of the ads from what I have read.

Pay premium prices for a car and still get ads, what is happening to the world?

I mean is BMW bleeding money that bad or is it a hop on the bandwagon type of deal like everyone else?

Sometimes I am honestly thinking of picking up a truck a decade old and just getting away from all this tech

It's cool but also super annoying I have a SOS malfunction as well and have been driving around with a messed up NAV, no SiriusXM, no bmwapp remote start, and more. I mean oh well right what can you do. But ads just seems like insult on top of injury...

Well - It seems my X5 started the upgrade but didn't complete it. I now have the following message: "The upgrade or activation will be automatically resumed shortly." Not sure if this is progress.

Same here - seems stuck at will resume shortly after popping up unexpectedly - after 3 weeks with download complete message. Tried various suggestions but no luck - including a Genius who promised a call back 2 weeks ago, but seems to have also become stuck - no answer.

Yep! I'm wondering if this is related to those vehicles that have been coded with Bimmercode or some other method outside of BMW's OTA or dealer installed updates. https://g05.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh...1&postcount=24.

My update went through with no issue and I had done soft coding changes to 7 of the vehicle’s ECUs which were all reset to factory spec after the update. As long as you make no changes to the FA or reflash any of the ECU’s you should be ok. I am of the opinion it is related to the state of the battery and outside temperature. I live in a climate similar to Florida and have a 4 cyl diesel powered X5 that has a 90 Amp battery

What is the current iDrive 7 build. I see many notations to 1122. Is there anything newer ?

Dropping mine off for a -paid oil change- this Friday and might as well ask for a iDrive update

Latest is 11/2022.44 if loaded via ISTA and not OTA. Latest OTA is 07/2022. Next release will likely be 03/2023 if all follows history.

I just upgraded mine via ISTA to 11/2022.44 last night because I got tired of waiting for 07/2022 to become available via iDrive and with all of the complaints with failed OTA updates.

Does anyone know if ANYONE has been able to successfully install 07/2022.85 via OTA? Not ISTA or dealer updated but via OTA only. So far I haven't seen anyone that's posted here on the forums that's been able to successfully install 07/2022.85.

Thank you for the information. Perhaps it's just the .85 version. It could also be the different options/configurations based on the country you are in as well.

I believe you are the first one to report that you successfully updated your vehicle, via OTA, for any 07/2022.xx version. Hopefully more will chime in so we can narrow it down even further.

There have been quite a few folks that have posted that they successfully had the OTA, including in this thread. They are from various regions - US, UK, Canada and Australia starting last November.

I'm seeing lots of people who got the update but only one or two that were able to successfully install it. Do you have a link showing those people who were actually able to install the update once it uploaded to the car?

Here are the ones just from this thread which you have been involved with from just about the beginning. There are others spread throughout other threads.

Thanks for the links. I should have been more specific.

How many in the US have actually successfully installed this OTA update? I only see one person who got this update on a BMW built for the US market. Aren't you in the US? I'm sure you are well aware of the different options/features that differentiate vehicles in different countries.

I live in the US. Therefore, myself and many others on this forum are more interested in what issues and problems that those of us in the US have experienced with this update. I'm not trying to exclude other countries I just want to make sure EVERYONE who frequents this forum understands the differences in options/specs/features of vehicles built for different countries.

These updates can have different issues and results depending on what country is receiving the updates along with what options are on the affected vehicles.

My guess would be thousands have been successful. Forums such as this one magnify problems, not successes. There are folks from the US that have posted success in other threads. People who are not having problems have little impetus to come to a forum and post that. It really doesn't matter though if it is five or 50,000 who have been successful since not everyone has been. So far in every case I've seen of a person not being able to install the OTA that has taken it to a dealer it has been battery related. Many have charged their battery though and have not been successful.

My update is still stuck, with the message, ""The upgrade or activation will be automatically resumed shortly." I put the X5 on a battery tender overnight and charged it full, but that did not help.

In addition, I have had a steady Check Engine Light on for weeks -- dating to roughly when I began to try the OTA upgrade. I'm not sure if the CEL is the cause of why it won't update or if a failed update triggered the CEL. Any idea of any relationship between the two?

The CEL is likely why the update won’t install or at least one reason why it won’t. Take it in for that and also let them know about the update not installing abs hopefully they will take care of both.
