It means you should get a remote software upgrade (RSU) to Version 8.5 from 07/2023 (provided your car was manufactured since 04/2023).

Only a few people have done it and we have not heard any details. Of course it shouldn't override the cloud saved settings but it may do the locally saved (seats, media favorites, etc).

I had my 50e at a dealership yesterday to get a piece on the passenger door handle fixed. I was excited to see software update to idrive 8.5 on the service checklist. It was listed under a recall for a software update. I asked my service person about this and they confirmed the update would be performed while the vehicle was in for service.
When I picked up the vehicle last night idrive 8 was still installed unfortunately. I asked why the update wasn't completed and they sent this response: "I talked to a tech. He said since BMW released the service action and everyone knows there is a software update it blocked the actual software update from happening. The service action is so we make people aware that the interface will be changing with the update so they know ahead of time. The idrive 8.5 update will need to be installed via the OTA update when it is rolled out." A bit confusing, but according to my dealer, they are blocked from performing the update until the OTA is released to everyone. |

I had my X5M in today (April build) and was told the same thing. They were blocked from doing the software update. Coming in September.

Why no RSU for these cars? That 8.5 update seems like something random. Goodwill of dealer, code 0065230400 and others have to wait for a RSU. |

As far as I know all of the eligible vehicles (LCI) have the code. It could be BMW Germany wants dealers to do the update, BMWNA does not. They will not pay dealers to do the update unless it is required for another warranty repair. In the US that code is just informational and no action is required. All vehicles will receive it by RSU if they aren't updated by a dealer.

Given the earlier fiasco with the iDrive 8.5 rollout and communications where BMW AG were saying one thing and BMW North America were saying another, its no wonder we're at this point ....

Took delivery of my 50e on May 8. Brought car in to local dealer to replace windshield on Aug 1. While there, dealer updated to iDrive to 8.5. All my saved settings remained with the exception of the new arrangement of widgets.

Must pay for the iDrive 8.5 update on a brand new X5?
I took delivery on a new 2024 X5 xDrive 40i on July 3, 2023 from a dealer in Kinston, NC. This past week I called about a passenger side knee airbag recall that I had heard about from the salesman who sold us the car. While on the phone with the service manager I asked about the 8.5 iDrive update and was told that I would have to PAY for it ($225) unless the iDrive 8.0 version on my car was malfunctioning. He had gotten this from the regional "field" person from BMW.
The car is just over one month old and I have to pay for the iDrive update? This seems kind of outrageous. Can this be true? |

A dealer updating the software under warranty happens for two reasons:
- a safety issue - a problem reported by the customer that the update is supposed to fix. Other than those two, the dealer doesn't get paid from BMW to perform the update. Now, if the OTA update fails for some reason, BMW corporate will usually authorize the dealer to update the vehicle. Just wanting the latest isn't a reason for BMW to update you for free. |

Just walked into this controversy not knowing about it whatsoever. Long story short but after waiting on the insurance repair adjuster to view my wife's 2017 X5 at the collision center for literally a month they totaled it. Original estimate from the Penske Collision center was $12K but apparently when they pulled the front bumper that took the damage (along with the hood) the frame was bent.
So found myself in a situation in which the 30 day rental car was coming to an end and needed a new X5. Picked up the best 2024 X5 on the ground from my dealer with CA throwing in a nice discount. It's a June build date so has iD8 and based on the info in the forum latest head unit. Not a fan of iD8 ( have iD7 in my M850i and the 2017 X5 had iD6) but made it work for my wife. She liked the split screen on iD6 with the media on the left and clock on the right (she's always running late to work in the mornings ). So for the iD8 did the same put the map as the 3rd tile and removed everything else for her profile. Watched the video for iD8.5 and oh boy she'll be unhappy! So no plans to upgrade even if they try to push me an OTA for it later this year. Who wants the map as the home screen? Never look at it at all as when the Nav runs it's all on the HUD. Guess if you don't even order the premium package no HUD and then it may be useful but I'll never own a vehicle without a HUD. |

The truth of the matter is it's about 15 minutes of labor to do the programming. Hook the car up, start the programming... walk away, and come back later to unhook the car. A relationship with one's SA makes that a no brainer decision for customer satisfaction. |
