2023 X5 45e Range at 44 miles US with no mods
So after a day of playing on a full charge discharging to 6 miles, driving it back up to 12 miles with regenerative braking, then a full overnight charge , I wake up with 44 miles of range. How is that when we are only supposed to see about 30 miles of EV range?

It’s because it is an estimate of range based on how you drove the car just before you started to charge it. Also the anticipated weather. My car has estimated all the way up to 48 miles of range at times, but as soon as you drive it the numbers will adjust. Regularly I get between 33-37 no matter what the estimate is

your 45e is new with not a lot of driving, so the vehicle thinks you've been very efficient and reflects that in the electric range upon full charge. this is normal behavior for new 45e, and many new folks get excited initially when seeing this. after a few weeks of regular driving, you'll start seeing a more 'accurate' number that actually reflects how you've been driving. it bases this number on the previous ~18 miles of driving in addition to other factors such as ambient temperatures, battery temperature, HVAC use, among other things. this number can vary widely if your driving varies from day to day. regardless of what you see, you always have 17.1kWh of usable capacity.
that being said, you can still affect your electric range by adjusting your driving style, reduce HVAC use, and taking advantage of regeneration whenever possible such as going down hills. i average 34-37 real, driven electric miles in the temperate seasons due to my consistent daily commute. it will drop during the winter months. YMMV, literally congrats! |

Thanks for the updates and tips. The thing is absolutely amazing though! I can't believe how "light" it feels when you hit the click on the accelerator at almost 1500 pounds heavier than our X3 M40; and we only used 1 gallon of petrol in 89 miles!

i agree! it's been one of the best purchases in my adult life. i once went 7 months between fill-ups; currently 5 months since last fill-up and still 50% full (I do instill fuel stabilizer, debatable)

Miles to empty (for both the ICE and EV) is based on the previous 18-miles or so of use, and is a moving average. So, unless the conditions are EXACTLY the same as in those previous miles, the future miles won't agree. It could go up or down.

I expect performance from my cars (my other car being a '22 M4 M xDrive) and the 45e is not lacking in peppiness for its family SUV use case. I regularly corner the 45e in 90 degree curves with squealing tires now as I've gotten very comfortable with its limits, and it's near-flat cornering characteristics in the second lowest air suspension setting. And that's just in electric mode. Sports mode with manual shifting is like a decent sports SUV passing just about anyone with ease. Enjoy!

Put your cruise control on 45 mph everywhere you go and you can get pretty dang close to your 44 mile range. I got 2.5 miles per KW/h last night by going this speed to the grocery store and back home.

Anyone know if it's possible to code the battery up from the 17kWh to the Euro spec?

Are you guys all using the default 19 in tires with these performance metrics or something larger?
I know that smaller is better for max EV range (and ride comfort)... but for only a $600 upgrade the 20 in tires definitely give the car a more fun look! |

I think the mile/kWh is only meaningful for round trip drive, where elevation change is equalize. Because I can always do a downhill drive and get 3+mile/kWh. In my recent attend to maximized EV range, it was a 30 miles round trip drive with mixed of local and free way. I limit freeway speed to 70MPH. this trip, I got 2.3mile/kWh with very gentle foot.

in a nutshell, yes. stop and go will decrease efficiency; doesn't matter if it's electric or gas. cruising on freeways is efficient, but at some point, the higher speeds can be counterproductive
