Has anyone tried this new MMB yet? I have a 2023 X5 and was curious if this would work. If so, would it interfere with any functions on the screen?

I have on pre order and received this today.


We're constantly testing our product to ensure quality and stability. With our latest changes to the box hardware to increase stability across all iDrive versions, we have found out the product currently cannot connect to any smartphone hotspot. Only a 4G sim card works to provide an internet source to the box as of now.

Product experience is our top priority and we are not satisfied with this outcome. We hate to be the bearer of bad news. Our engineers are fixing this working day and night. If we really had to provide a new shipping date estimate, we'd estimate around February 2023. We may get the hotspot connection working a lot sooner, however, we cannot give a guarantee.

All in all, we are incredibly appreciative of your support in MMB thus far. We would have never guessed we would have a shipment queue of upwards of 300 BMW supporters.

We have a few options we can provide to you now. Simply reply to this email with any of the three options and our support team will assist you further.

1. I'd like to receive an MMB BMW now. I can get ahold of a 4G SIM card for internet access. (Future software updates are not possible to fix hotspot issues.)

2. I'd love to wait for the MMB BMW and receive a 30 USD refund for this delay. I want to receive more frequent emails notifying me of any product status updates.

3. No thank you, please issue me a full refund for my order.

The box I ordered is delayed. The version I ordered requires a hotspot, meaning no build in modem.

From a reseller: “Boxes have been shipped to us”. So it's fair to assume direct-to-consumer shipping will start soon.

My last email from the manufacturer said late Feb or early March shipping. Hopefully we only have to wait a couple weeks..

Update from the manufacturer:

“Thank you for your kind patience. Our BMW box is working, the only bug that we are working day in and day out trying to fix is the hotspot connection. Right now, only sim card will provide internet access.

Our engineers are working on it every day to solve this as soon as possible.“

So it looks like both the MMB box and the Carluex box can't use a hotspot - maybe it's a BMW security feature, I don't know, but requiring a SIM to get Internet is a bit of a bummer for both boxes.

Not a show stopper, but for live data such as traffic/music streaming/video it's a bit of a bummer.

Anyone considering the sim version of this unit - I'd personally think twice. The touch screen is very laggy, the sound delay unbearable, and it keeps disconnecting. If you're planning to use Google Maps or Waze, good luck. They barely work - freeze and crash all the time. Plus, the unit gets really hot.

Tried reaching out for help, but no word from support. If you've got one on pre-order, maybe consider getting a refund.

Trying to understand the functionality of the device, the manufacturer's support team doesn't seem to be able to explain this clearly.

Will this MMB box give is ID6 Android Auto even without the MMB having data? No wifi or sim, will it still work as android auto for us android phone users? Basically I'm not looking to use the box to download apps, watch YouTube or anything. I'm only interested in having android auto in ID6 by utilizing this MMB. Thoughts?
