Waze + wirelessly charging in the OEM tray are well known for overheating the iPhone. if you must continue to use Waze, use a more efficient wireless charger or plug in a charging cable

WAZ will require a fairly constant cellular connection, plus the GPS functioning, and the processor load. Throw in trying to charge, and you'll get heat in that enclosed compartment.

The wireless pad also becomes less efficient, resulting in more heat, if you have a case on your phone or it is not properly centered on the pad (as indicated by the blue LED illuminating that's hard to see unless you're looking for it).

If you were walking around while running the same stuff, your phone would get hot even without trying to charge it if it were functioning the same amount of time.

Unfortunately it's across many OEM's, not just BMW. It also depends on other factors like phone and case. Mine worked flawlessly in my car until I upgraded from an iPhone 12 Pro to 15 pro. Now I have constant overheating issues. No other changes besides phone and case. The wireless charging technology really just blows in general but it's convenient and less clutter which is why we tolerate it.

resurrecting this thread -- new owner of a 19 xDrive40i and when i use my iPhone 13 Mini on the wireless pad, after a 20+ minute drive, the phone is blazing hot!! Any fix for this besides installing an aftermarket fan?

No fix - it's an issue BMW just ignored.
