Idrive 9 update

Hi, new owner of the X50E. The dealer told me they day I got the car, that idrive9 will be rolled out. Any idea when this happens? I am interested especially because idrive9 will have a premium digital connected drive with 3rd party apps. I really hope I can get a better music player then the current default one that has a terrible UI. Carplay wireless audio is such low quality I am looking for alternatives to play lossless high quality audio in the car

There are no plans for current vehicles to be updated to iDirve9. Should be coming in the next generation.

Strange - the dealer told me that it will be rolled out to my car. The guy actually has it running in his car (also an X5).

That’s iDrive 8.5 probably. The dealer might be confused.

As mentioned above, he was likely referring to iDrive 8.5. That has been rolling at as OTA for the last month or so.

There is no way that iDrive9 will get released and not require new hardware. I don’t recall BMW ever releasing a major version without needing upgraded hardware whether that be in the form of an LCI or new generation for a model.

If I remember correctly MGU22 uses Snapdragon so it should be able to run Android. That said, iDrive9 won't appear until the G65's.

The “hardware” is same (except few BT/WiFi modules etc) between the X1 which does run iD 9 and LCI X5. Whether BMW actually ports iD9 to X5 is another question.

Those few different BT & WiFi modules will be the exact reason why it doesn’t come to the current gen X5s.

I mean there could be a number of different reasons BMW “chooses” not to bring iD9 to X5. But from a purely HW capability perspective, they’re identical. X1 just uses external chips for wireless instead of the Qualcomm ones, but the capabilities are they same. They also might not want to build/support iD9 on two different versions of HW. Who knows.

Hi, have a X5 G05 Xdrive 40i, and I am having problems with car play, I don't want to listen to the audio either through Bluetooth or adding the music via USB to the radio memory.

I have already reset the idrive, I updated my iPhone, I have even disconnected a negative pole from the battery hahaha to see if that helps and nothing, I only listen to the stations

Take a look at this video. He says its iDrive 8.5 and it has live TV feature. I’ve done the update to 8.5 (2024 X5 G05 LCI) and I don’t have that app.
Anyone else see this or do you think he meant iDrive 9.0?

TiVo was removed a few months ago, it evidently was only meant for the 7 Series.

The person that made the video is wrong (on so many points)

The TiVo video app isn’t part of iDrive 8.5. It’s an app provisioned by BMW connected drive services and is vehicle dependent.

Currently is not available for the X5.

Vehicles produced before July 2023 with a Head Unit 5 (HU-H5) came equipped with BMW Operating System 8. With the upgrade to I-level G070/S18A-23-07-523 or higher, these vehicles will have their operating system change to BMW Operating System 8.5.
This software upgrade is scheduled to be released directly to customers via Remote Software Upgrade(estimated release date of September 2023). Under certain circumstances, these vehicles could be upgraded to I-level G070/S18A-23-07-523 or higher at the BMW center due to a separate unrelated repair.
BMW Operating System 8 will be upgraded to BMW Operating System("OS")8.5 with QuickSelect in vehicles with the "HU-H5" head unit.

BMW Operating System 9
Production Date
From August 2023
Affected Option Code
With HU-H6 Head Unit

SITUATION
With the introduction of the Headunit 6 (HU-H6), certain BMW vehicles will now utilize the new BMW Operating System 9.

INFORMATION
With the launch of the BMW Operating System 8 and Operating System 8.5 (OS8.5) withQuickSelect, a new level of functionality was presented to our customers. While these systems were new and exciting, BMW is always innovating. With that comes the introduction of another concurrent version of our operating system: BMW Operating System 9
BMW Operating System 9 is NOT an upgrade to BMW Operating System 8.5 with QuickSelect. Infact, most of the functionality of BMW Operating System 9 is nearly identical to BMW Operating System 8.5 with QuickSelect.
BMW Operating System 9 is only available in vehicles with the HU-H6. This new headunit uses Android Open Source for its base programming, which is a departure from previous headunits that used Linux.
Initially, BMW Operating System 9 will only be available in the smaller 2:1 ratio Multifunction Display. The larger 3:1 ratio Multifunction Display will be for HU-H5 with the Linux base programming.

The main changes with Operating System 9 can be found listed below:
BMW Digital Premium
BMW Navigation
BMW Connected Drive Store

BMW Digital Premium
BMW Digital Premium is a subscription service that is available in the Connected Drive Store for BMW Operating System 9. This service activates premium options with added features for certain systems in BMW Operating System 9 such as but not limited to:
1.BMW Navigation
2.BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant
3.BMW MyModes
4.BMW Connected Drive Store
When BMW Digital Premium is active in a vehicle, all the previously mentioned systems will have expanded operating abilities or additional options available.

BMW Navigation
New to BMW Operating System 9 vehicles, navigation maps are no longer stored directly in the vehicle. Now the navigation data is downloaded for the surrounding vehicle area or for the currently activate guided route. As the vehicle moves, new map data is downloaded continuously.
With standard navigation, route guidance functionality has not changed but Real Time Traffic information (RTTI) is available for the mapped route only.
With BMW Digital Premium, the navigation functionality includes Real-time traffic visualization in color (even without active guidance) and enriched map visualizations, (i.e., 3D buildings and satellite images, points of interest including fuel prices, parking fees) and street parking availability in select cities.

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant will be more functional with BMW Operating System 9 and Digital Premium. The system will provide improved voice recognition and a greater range of customization for the Intelligent Personal Assistant avatar.

BMW MyModes
With BMW Operating System 9, the selection of different MyMode options increases for the customer from the standard “Sport”, “Efficient”, and “Personal” choices. In addition to these standard options, “Relax”, “Expressive”, and “Digital Art” will be available with more to come. The added MyMode options are only available with Digital Premium.

BMW ConnectedDrive Store
With Digital Premium, the ConnectedDrive Store will now give the customer access to not only BMW apps but also 3rd party apps for various Music, News, Sports and Games (i.e., Spotify,iHeartRadio, Yahoo Music).
NOTE:
For some of these 3rd party apps, an additional ID and log-in for that service may be needed.
Any app data that is stored while BMW Digital Premium is active will not be lost if the service is cancelled, but all downloaded apps and games will not be accessible until the Digital PremiumService is reactivated.

NOTE:
Customers that have BMW Operating System 8 or BMW Operating System 8.5 WILL NOT be able to move to BMW Operating System 9. Also, due to the multiple hardware, software and wiring harness changes, a retrofit option to the HU-H6 head unit WILL NOT be possible.

Only had the chance to read all posts today. My X5 has HU-H6 - manufactured Sep. 2023. It was delivered with OS 8.5 installed, but reading this 9 will not be available for my car. Oh well I was curious to see the premium digital option and the possibility to get 3rd party apps natively. Oh well - in any case I use Carplay 95% of the time in my car. The only bummer is music. I don't like the wireless streaming and when plugging in my SSD with tons of hi res music, I need to suffer the horrible bmw media player......

All LCI's have the same headunit as far as we have seen. I believe the OP is mistaken and has HU-H5 and not 6 unless there was a big change that no one is aware of.

You maybe right. The only thing I do know is what the dealer told me that I have a newer version of the infotainment system delivered with 8.5 and upgradeable to 9. FWIW, I drove from August to December a rental 2022 IX that had OS8 and when moving to my X5 I noticed a quicker and more fluid idrive. Hence, I assumed I had better HW, but it could be also the pure effect of 8.5.

You know how dealers are. There are no plans to upgrade the G05 to iD9.
