So let me know if I missing something or doing something wrong:

If I am listening to radio (FM or Satellite) and then ask Siri to do something (say, navigate somewhere or the weather or make a phone call), the car does not go back to playing the radio when done. Instead, it goes to either no source or the last iPhone audio source. Quite annoying but maybe just the way the vehicle interacts with CarPlay?

I have never experienced that happening that I can remember. I assume you are using a long press of the microphone to summon Siri and not relying on the phone hearing you?

Actually I am just using “hey siri” to summon her. I wonder if that explains it…?

I tend to long press the mic when calling up Siri, and it doesn’t return to the previous media source afterwards. this was before updating to version 11/2023.50. back in 2022 it used to return after “Hey Siri” but the behavior changed after a software update (can’t recall exactly which version, though)

I’ll test both the button and “Hey Siri” after work now that it’s on 11/2023.50.

It could be since that is using your phone to hear it rather than the vehicle's microphone. The Hey Siri function has been added to 8/8.5 so those folks should be able to use either. Give it a shot and see if it makes any difference.

ok, I tested the media player’s behavior after calling up Siri with the steering wheel mic button and “Hey Siri” with both Apple Music playing via CarPlay and the radio. its behavior may not have changed at all with the software update as I mentioned before (indeed, it was a presumption on my part as I don’t use this feature regularly).

RADIO
- Siri with mic button > command > returned to radio
- “Hey Siri” > command > did not return to radio

APPLE MUSIC
- Siri with mic button > command > returned to Apple Music
- “Hey Siri” > command > returned to Apple Music

conclusion: you have more chances of the media player resuming after calling up Siri with the steering wheel mic button instead of “Hey Siri”

Thanks. Will play with it this weekend. This feels like a major kink in the UI to me and not a fringe case. If the button fixes it, that’s a good workaround.
