my dealer mentioned on Monday Feb-04 that he has received approval to start production of vehicle on Feb-08, however he still does not have a production order number as of today...

i suspect they don't have an allocation for the x5 with 3rd row seat and just coming up with some random dates to buy some time....

I don't fully understand on how this ordering works for BMW. If my dealer does not have an allocation for Feb, do I have to wait few weeks just to get the production number.

My order was placed for a 40i with the 3rd row when my dealer got his allocation today.

They gave me a production number, but when I called BMW Genius, he told me that it's tentatively scheduled for build week 14.

at that point you get the true 3 row X7 if the car isn't out of your price range. I feel like the X5 with 3 rows is more a short trip sort of vehicle since the 3rd row is comically small

I'm not actually planning on using the 3rd row. It's a joke.
It was the only way I could get the air suspension without the IAS.
I'm also hoping that this model will allow the second row to recline a bit, but I'm not counting on it. The X7 is just too big for me now that my kids are grown.

Ah, I see that makes sense. I like the X7 but don't even need an X5 since the wife and I don't have kids and aren't planning to at any point. She's loves the X5 which is good, she wasn't a fan of the X3 M40i I had before it scared her

Does it make sense? Instead of getting something that improves performance (IAS -- I have it and love it), azulita gets something he doesn't even want and is not useful to him (third row seat).

It allows you to recline and move forward and backwards. The seats are just about usuable also.

IMO it is the best value option out there

I've been told the same. Week 14 for a build with 3rd row and Laserlights. I have a production/order number but that's it.

The seats are usable in the right scenarios. I have used 3rd row on my F15 for over 5 years. Kids love them and will choose to use them over the middle row given a choice. There have been multiple trips when we have taken the kids friends (around 5 ft) on day trips that wouldn't have been possible otherwise. We have also been able to car share with friends when otherwise 2 cars would have been required.

When you consider the target audience, for £1400 the 3rd row is a steal.

BMWs side does not make sense but his reasoning for getting the 3rd row does

I'm not sure the 3rd row gives you the ability to recline the 2nd row. Again, I'm not sure but you may want to double check.

I understood it as the 2nd row reclines forward to allow for more room in the back (and ease of access), but it doesn't recline backwards more than the X5 with only 2 rows. So basically if you have 4 short people (kids) wanting to sit back there you can adjust the 2nd row and split the difference between the 2nd and 3rd row.

Yes, that's my understanding as well. I think is terrible that the 2nd row can't recline backwards.

I have the third row. It reclines about 10-15 degrees, like an economy airline seat - not much but you notice the difference. The mad part is that the 2nd row doesn't slide if you don't have the third row - I find it hard to believe this is true given most other brands now allow you to slide back and forth.

any other thoughts you can share on third row? is it same as previous X5 or bit larger? how's that Air Suspension working?

thanks!

It reclines 10-15 from the default, already partially, reclined position? Or from vertical?

Forget the head height - 3rd row is better than being in the back of a 911 but unless you are a child, your knees will be against the 2nd row. If you lower the middle section of the 2nd row then it's very usable. It's a compromise but they are genuinely useful seats. I will be getting a tow-mounted rear luggage carrier to cope with the luggage but otherwise there is enough room for 6.
