Interesting..must be a 50i thing. My 40i is M suspension. I'm also on 22s.

So... to get adaptive drive, you have to have an active route going in Navigation? So to make it work for your daily drive to and from work, you have to have a navigation route going every time, and Betty giving you constant voice directions that you don't need, since you already know where to go?

Am I missing something? That seems like that would get annoying.

It'll adapt without route guidance, but it'll adapt quicker and more enhanced with it running because it knows what's coming up.

I just turn off the voice instructions if I know where I'm going.

I love the idea of adaptive drive - in theory... but BMW's track record on this vehicle with anything software related... I'm not trusting BMW to make any software-based decisions for me. I stick to the fixed drive modes and switch manually.

Comfort => Sport => comfort => ....
Level 3 => level 2 => Level 3 => ....
Electronic Damper Control (EDC) continuously controls the air suspension dampening which is adapted to road conditions.

Air suspension ride height follows it's own logic:
Normal (up to 87mph) > Dynamic (87-124) > Normal (up to 87mph)

Normal > Dynamic > Sport (over 124mph) > Dynamic > Normal

When driving without a preset program, the vehicle level is adapted automatically, depending on the speed. This reduces drag and increases the driving dynamics of the G05. If the various driving speeds are undercut, the previous ride height is set.

Dynamic level
If a driving speed of roughly 140 km/h (87 mph) is exceeded, the "Dynamic level" (–10 mm) is set. The "Dynamic level" cannot be approached manually and the driver is not notified about this ride height.

The following table shows the control strategy (hysteresis) of the dynamic level.

Speed Time Driving level
> 160 km/h (>100 mph) Direct lowering Dynamic level (–10 mm)
140 – 160 km/h (87–100 mph) > 170 s Dynamic level (–10 mm)
< 100 km/h (<62 mph) Direct raising Normal level (+/–0 mm)
100 – 120 km/h (62–75 mph) > 20 s Normal level (+/–0 mm)

Sport level
The "Sport level" is set above a driving speed of 200 km/h (124 mph). The Sport level can also be set manually by pressing the SPORT Driving Experience Control switch or the ride height rocker button, irrespective of the speed (from 0 to maximum speed). The LED on the ride height rocker button indicates which sport level is activated
I did not see it lower down when speed > 87mph.

It doesn't show the -10mm drop. Try going above 124mph and report back.

Oh, I see
"Dynamic level" cannot be approached manually and the driver is not notified about this ride height. You'll also have to be over 87 for 2min 50secs LOL.

The air suspension level indicators are:

Off-road level <> High level <> Normal level <> Sport level <> Load level

Hit 124 and you'll see the indicator change from Normal to Sport.

I don't understand the waiting period for the air suspension. If BMW thinks the vehicle handles better with the 10mm drop above that speed, then I want the car to begin adjusting immediately!

Adjusting height also takes time, it makes sense to have a timer for speed threshold before triggering adjustment, so you won't feel riding on horseback

To me the most interesting part of adaptive was the drop in fuel consumption. I would normally get an average of 10l/100km but see the pics...drove through Germany respecting construction areas and most speed limits and then usually 150-170 km h where there were no limits (the car is still below 2000 km on the clock) and averaged a bit over 8l/100km. When driving through Austria which is plagued with fixed cameras and policemen with laser guns the fuel consumption went to 7.3 l. Average speed was quite ok for Germany given the facts I had quite a few construction areas and that lowered the speed to below 100. Impressive car...it feels completely different than the f15.

As mentioned it gives better throttle and engine response so if you're doing anything other than set cruising more fuel will most likely be used.

I really like Adaptive.

My question is, do I have to switch it on every time I get in the car? The default appears to be Comfort.

You can code it to default to Adaptive using Bimmercode and a OBD adapter.

I don't think we have the ability just yet to code that.

The BimmerCode App the OBD MX+ Adapter does not give us the ability to select a default drive mode.
