Brand new 2024 - X5 50e - check engine light on
I started this in another thread, but I think it's worth it to see how many people are affected by this or BMW's policy in similar situations.
It turns out that a couple days after taking delivery I noticed the check engine light on. I took it to the service center because I had plans for a getaway weekend and drive on the highway and I didn't want any surprises. The SA told me that it must be something simple and deleted the code using a simple OBD scanner. Advised me that if it happens again, I should bring the car back. After two weeks the check engine light came on again and I made an appointment and dropped the car at the service center thinking I could pick it up the next day. To my surprise, they called me 2 days later to tell me that the fault is caused by a refrigerant shut off valve for the high voltage battery unit and that the part is in backorder from Germany. Estimated time just to get the part…. drum roll…. 3 months. I reacted a little surprised and I said... now what? are you giving me another new car? are you buying this one?... Well, it turns out dear BMW enthusiasts that BMW just cares about selling and that’s it. At this point they told me that I need to call BMW of North America which I did and after speaking to a computer for 20 minutes, a human took my name and VIN number and said that in about a week, my case will be assigned to a case manager. So far, I don’t have a car, not even a loaner and I’m so frustrated and feel so powerless that I’m thinking about hiring a lawyer. Unfortunately, regardless of the outcome, this will take a lot of time and money to fix thanks to BMW’s policies. The SA told me they have other cars with the same problem, so if your brand-new car is also affected, let me know your thoughts on how to proceed. Either wait for a loaner and then wait 3 months for the part or sue them. Any other advice will be greatly appreciated. Last edited by walketed; 06-15-2023 at 02:59 PM.. |

I am very sorry to hear about your issue. That is disconcerting on so many levels. I hope your situation, however you decide to handle it, is resolved swiftly.

You’re in the US so usually how it goes…
BMWNA will probably do some good will and take off some payment/s The dealer should have put you in a comparable loaner but it won’t qualify as a lemon buyback and doubtful they’ll buy the car back, even with a lawyer. Keep pressing them though. |

I'm sorry to hear this. It's unacceptable for bmw to do this. My 50e engine light came on last week at only 500 miles after picking it up.. went to dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong and they cleared the engine light.. I'm a bit stumped but my dealer has been amazing so I trust them. I got the obdeleven scanner after it happened and will keep it until next time.. it should not even happen on a new car let alone a BMW.

This seems like a simple lemon law case. In Florida, your car can only be in the shop for 30 days before they need to refund you. I would definitely go this route, read up on local lemon law, and make sure to get everything in writing. Seems open and shut to me.
I also had a check engine light come on with my X5 50e. Read it with my code reader and it made no sense-- something about the inverter on the 48V system. Dealer cleared it, tested it, drove the car for 40 miles, and said it should not come back. These things are way too complicated, and the software is not keeping up. |

Speak to a lemon law lawyer and see what they say. I don't think this would qualify but I am also not an attorney. |

Depending on state, a reasonable number of attempts can mean the vehicle has been out of service for repair of one or more nonconformities for a cumulative total of 30 or more days. Imagine the first attempt takes a year to fix -- would the consumer just be out of luck? Unlikely. There is often a time factor that overrides. 30 days seems to be the cut off in Florida, but consult a lawyer. Last edited by CAtoMA; 06-16-2023 at 08:52 AM.. Reason: typo |

I have exactly the same issue with our brand new 2024 X5 50E vehicle. I got the engine light turned on around 350 miles after two weeks. I bought a code reader "BlueDriver Bluetooth Pro OBDII Scan Tool" just to make sure I can see what the issue is with the car before taking it to the dealership for the service. The message was "Hybrid/EV Battery/Pack Coolant Control Value "A" Performance/Stuck Off". I took the car to the dealership after two days they told me that they need to replace the refrigerant shut off valve (Part number 64-50-5-A0F-0D0). They need to keep the vehicle for 6 to 8weeks since the part is back order. However, I searched the part on line and it was available in multiple dealerships. I told them I need my car back and when the part arrives I will bring the car for the repair. When I went there to pick up my car, they manually made the second screen off and couple of error signal were showing on the screen. I did not know why they are hesitant to return the car to me even I told them I am not going to drive with the car until we get the part back in the dealership. It looks like this could be a factory recall. it may take more than one month before we get the car back, they do not release the correct information. We got a loaner car and the dealership service advisor has not promised to return the car. It does not have ETA. The driving of this car was the best experience I had. It was very smooth and steady but it is surprisingly the quality is not there.

This is indeed concerning for new owners. I wonder if the replacement is going to be exact same part which doesn't inspires a whole of confidence of its reliability given the no. of people reporting this issue in their brand new cars.

I read on Rennlist that Cayenne eHybrid production is on hold until Q4 or possibly Q1 of ‘24. Makes me wonder if both the 50e and Cayenne hybrid have unknown gremlins??

Thank you all for the support!! Here's the latest update:
Yesterday I finally got a loaner, '24 X6, nice enough to stop complaining for a few days.. haha. The broker AND the sales associate called me to offer me one of the 50e's they have in stock, pending what BMWNA will determine who knows when. I don't know what this means, but it is a good sign. So it seems that the issue escalated all the way up to BMWNA already and they are analyzing the options; the case manager hasn't contacted me yet. Also the sales manager of the dealer is now involved. I guess they don't want me to buy a Tesla. In regards to the lemon law, it looks like because the car will be in the shop for more than 30 days, I have a case, but BMWNA will probably do right by me and fix this. I'll let you all know any new info on the case! Last edited by walketed; 06-18-2023 at 06:47 PM.. |

Even if they offer me to buy back the car, I really don't know what to do. I love the torque of the 50e but it seems that they will have some issues down the road. So either consider an iX or a plain vanilla X5. In case I don't jump ship (Tesla or Mercedes).

I actually went to pick up my car and told them they can't keep the car against my will since I bought it! it's not even a lease. And they refused to let me drive off. I even told them that this is illegal, threaten to sue them, etc.. I think because the high voltage battery can heat up to a point where it can cause damage to the car, the occupants and ultimately the brand, they are not taking any risks. |

I don't know what to tell you... either you don't take delivery or take a risk and talk to the sales associate before taking delivery. The car aside from this is amazing!, hope BMW fixed this.

Updating on the status. After the service followed BMW directions to check connections, wires and components related to the screen issue, BMW has given the dealership authorization to reprogram the vehicle. No update on the valve replacement. Still waiting for a new part to come.
