Drive Recorder as a software purchase?
Has anyone find any updates about drive recorder? All the threads I found about it seems to be old.
I think I read in some thread there are rumors they are going to sell it as a software in Connected store later (I checked 7 series configurator and do see it as a $200 option). I know it requires parking assistance package for the 4 cameras, which I have. I also know it was buggy for some time but I think this integrated solution is well worth the $200 if they open it up to X5's... |

It seems like its happening (in terms of it being available as a software purchase) based on news articles online. For example, this one (3 weeks ago) says it’ll be available early next year (aka early 2020) with one of the software updates.

Not that I expected much different, but I reached out to BMW and asked how I could purchase it for my MY2019 G05 and got the following boiler plate response a week later:
Dear Customer, We do not have any official communication regarding if and when Driver Recorder will be available to purchase for vehicles that are not already equipped with this feature. Please contact BMW Customer Relations (BMW CIC) by phone at 1-800-567-2691 for further information/feedback on this topic. Sincerely, BMW ConnectedDrive Canada |

Most of the functionality of a dash cam doesn't help me, I just want accident-coverage which this system should be sufficient for (before and after 20 seconds each). |

I was able to purchase the DR for my G05 in the Belgian BMW ConnectedDrive Store last week. Was activated immediately after purchase.

So is it worth it? I was checking it out yesterday but it seems to me that you need to do quite some clicks to save a recording manually. There is no "single button press" to save the last 20 seconds and the next 20 seconds. You have to press the camera button first etc. By the time you navigate there, the first 20 seconds that triggered you to save something are already over

Where you able to use it? How do you activate it? I see it's activated on the connected website and in the 'purchased services' in idrive. But I can not find an app or other icon in the system. Let alone acivate it. I have a similar issue with Apple carplay. I can't get it to work (nor does the garage). |

I had bmw assistance out last week and the techie stated that the X5 should be getting the remote parking feature of the 7 series. I’m not sure if you already have it in the USA but in the Uk we didn’t get it despite having the display key which is needed.

I ordered Drive Recorder via the Connected Drive Apps store today. Only took out a 1-month subscription, as I wasn't sure it was going to work and didn't want to pay for 12-months,....and to my surprise after updating the Apps and profile in my car it worked. My vehicle is a Jan'19 build with 11/2019.34 all all the safety packages.
Holy shit, something from BMW that actually works the way it should.... (can it be true?!?!?!) I'm going to test it over the next few days, see if its worth taking out the yearly subscription. |

The option cannot even be added to a car's FA so is unlikely to ever make it during this model's lifecycle. |

The BMW concession couldn't figure out why my drive recorder didn't show up.
Called BMW connected drive helpdesk directly and they told me that the G05 needs the nov 2019 software update in order to let it work. My car has the july 2019 version. Remote upgrade does not work. Will need to make an appointment with the concession. |

Interestingly recording can be Manual and Automatic, manual meaning the driver can initiate manual recording at any time, while automatic means the car records based on an incident. There is also a pre-trigger and post trigger recording time setting. The "trigger" is an event defined as a incident by the vehicles safety systems (eg. like an accident), but I suspect the driver initiating manual recording would also be a trigger. In settings, you can also define which cameras record, front, sides and rear. In theory very powerful, if it works as described it would put dash cams out of business... |

OK, Drive Recorder works great, and from my perspective its a dash cam integrated into the cars cameras, perfect.
Some key points: 1. It can be driver (manual) initiated, or automatic by the car. 2. It records across all 4 cameras - front, rear, left/right sides. 3. The most you can record is 40 seconds, 20 seconds pre-trigger and 20 seconds post trigger. 4. You can download the video via USB. 5. It seems to me that its "always" recording, because when I initiated record, it actually captured the 10 seconds prior to me manually triggering. I'm impressed, See attached screen shots... |

Wow, that’s perfect. I was just looking into getting a dashcam. Do you happen to know what the bit rate is, ie can you read license plate numbers?
