Sounds like my upbringing, Irish catholic father and Scottish/english Protestant mother. Right and wrong were everything and a solid work ethic. You wanted something you worked for it. There just isn't enough of that around anymore.

I saw an example of the results in our own town earlier this week.

Back in November, our town elected a twenty-something woman to the town board. I was at town hall for business a few days ago, and she was there spewing off twisted SJW "facts" about a large "evil" company who filed for a building permit. They treat their employees badly, only pay their (unskilled) labor $37,000/year, kill baby penguins and pollute water, etc. She had never toured one of their facilities, never personally spoken to their employees, and accepted everything posted about them on Farcebook as gospel without even doing some napkin-math to check the sanity of the data presented.

Using the Farcebook numbers about this "evil" company, they are paying $5.99/hour *above* the state's minimum wage. When I entered the workforce back in the day, minimum wage was only $3.35/hour. I would have partied like it was 1999 for $5.99/hour, and $9.34/hour as unskilled labor was just a fantasy.

When asked for my opinion, I just said that I didn't have one without verifying facts from reputable sources and not Farcebook bullies.

We have obviously failed as a generation with teaching the skills about how to validate facts and not believe anything posted on the Internet without skepticism.....

Yep, Catholic father, Protestant mother. We bounced back and forth between the churches. I never took to either.

Protestant father, Catholic mother. I'm Catholic. We only went to my dad's church on special occasions.

I use FB just to post pics for family and friends to see. But I'm thinking about dumping it anyway just because I don't like Zuckerberg's attitude and FB itself so is friggin' pervasive and intrusive. Not that Google and the others aren't, but FB seems to go above and beyond to pollute the web.

So I have to bring the milk home and instead of merely storing it and pouring it out of the container I brought it home in, I have to "decanter" it into something else. And that something else, which is bulky, will have to be washed over and over.

Uh...pass.

Both parents were flaming atheists. But a rock-solid work ethic and values which were right out of the Old Testament.

Always my argument when people push religion as the basis of ethics. It's not. There are plenty of religious scumbags and loads of solid, morally centered atheists.

My dad, rest his soul never really pushed religion and neither did mom. Dad often referred to the Golden Rule though, and I think it can hold true either as a religious point of view or just a moral ethical one. I live by that and try to instil it in my children. I don't think you can go wrong living by this no matter what your beliefs are.

This was my mantra for years. But lately I find myself questioning whether or not you can have moral absolutes without an absolute authority. Something/someone to whom all are accountable. And no matter how hard I try, I can't deny that the modern Western culture of which I am a gleeful and grateful participant is the direct expression of Judeo-Christian teachings and values.

There's a reason they call it the Golden Rule. Not the Leaden Rule, nor the White Metal Rule.

They were atheists who had, not coincidentally, been raised in devout Christian homes. At least in my Mom's case, her atheism is mostly a middle-finger to her strict Catholic upbringing, and to the Catholic Church for not allowing her to re-marry in the Church after narrowly escaping my violent abusive monster of a biological father.

Here's an older-than-old-fart story.

My dad was the oldest of 5 boys. My grandpa, his dad, was a notoriously unsentimental and practical man.

My dad went to the doctor at 12 or 13 years old with what ended up being tonsillitis. My grandpa asked the doctor what the solution was, and the doctor said he could do the tonsillectomy surgery in his office that day and my dad would need a couple days' rest afterwards. My grandpa said "Alright, start in on him (my Dad). I'll be right back with 4 more." Whereupon he went and fetched my 4 uncles and got them all "tonsillectomized" one after the other.

Now that is some hardassed parenting, ladies and gents.

Kids these days would sue their parents for that.

Still waiting for the headline, "Vegan, 18 years old, sues parents for making him eat meat as a child"

About 30 years ago, one of my co-workers had two of her kids make independent calls to child protective services because they were unhappy with the soupy stew that she served everyone for dinner that night. For the next six months, she was subjected to unannounced home inspections and social worker interviews to confirm that the kids were being properly fed.

I can only imagine how bad today's kids have it, crying to CPS because daddy took away a 9-year-old's smartphone.....

Some years ago the step-daughter of a friend of mine told someone at her school that her step-father was abusive. The cops showed up with DFS folks that evening and were ready to take her away to a foster home. It was the first time he knew of any of it. He was stunned. So he told the cops and DFS folks she was lying, but they were free to take her away. Needless to say she recanted her story very quickly. The cops had seen this happen before with other kids, so they dropped it. She never pulled that stunt again.
