Drivetrain Malfunction

Anyone else get these?

Comes up occasionally with aggressive driving but not really pushing the vehicle hard realistically. Message comes up, nothing in check control, check engine light goes away. Took it to local BMW and they couldn't find anything logged/stored. Any thoughts before I take it in and have them not find anything again?

Thanks

I get this as well when driving hard and suspect it's a combo of racechip and intake and dp. I usually reboot the car and it goes away.

I can almost guarantee it's related to the RaceChip. As onfireX5 said, probably map setting or octane related, possibly overboost. If you have BimmerLink, you can run some logs and check the values and try to correlate with when you get the malfunction. Not sure of the RaceChip app allows logging like JB4, otherwise you'll be relying on the "fudged" boost numbers versus actual.

Can you remove the race chip and see if you get the error? If not then that would be the cause

Racechip 5
Always 93 octane.
I'll throw the bypass block in and give it a spin and get an OBDlink ordered.

Thanks all

Any exhaust or intake mods ?

I’ve run 93 octane and level 7 since 2016 on 3 different BMW’s without an issue. Odd that 93 and 5 might be a problem unless other mods are there.

BMC Filter, FI catback, catless secondaries.
Maybe I'll just go to 7

Haha. The bypass test will be very telling.

If it goes away with the bypass, it could be the cat less secondary could be causing a spike overboost in conjunction with the RaceChip at low rpm, tip in boost.

Just guessing…….

I just recently got catless primary and secondary downpipes with JB4 and bmc filters and I get this same problem I just delete the code with my JB4 but it's something with the JB4 and racechip I suspect

Scan the car and find out what's the reading.
Also take pictures on your installation.
Drivetrain Malfunction can be anything, I've had few Drivetrain Malfunction on stock car before.
Maybe BMW uses cheaper chipset due to chip shortage.

Would a RaceChip by itself (no other mods) ever throw a code? I did Race map 7 on 91 octane 100 degree F day on my f85 X5M and tried to get it to throw a code and it wouldn't no matter how long I went WOT over and over again. Put it though a brutal test. Had it for a year and could never get it to throw a code at all.

I re used the same hardware with the F95 maps on my 2021 X5M and while I haven't had it for long, had a 90 degree F day and ran it Map6 on 91 hard and no codes. So far so good.

Hello, have you taken out an extended warranty on the car? If yes, then in this case you just need to contact the company with which you have concluded a contract. Otherwise, I would recommend that you take out an extended car warranty contract. For example, I have a contract with Select Auto Protect, which specializes in digital warranties, to cover costs such as general maintenance costs.

Why’s anyone run lower octane than 98? At my fuel cap I’ve words from factory saying recommended “ Shell V power” ~ I’ve always run on 98 octane here in australia

Different measurement depending on where you live. Some countries use AKI and others use RON.

87 AKI = 91 RON
91 AKI = 93 RON
93 AKI = 98 RON

When folks in the US say they are running 91 or 93 octane maps, they are talking about AKI. 91 octane AKI is the highest you can buy in some US states.

I drive out of my way to fuel up and have run nothing but 93 octane/AKI.
I'm out on business but could not replicate the error before I had left.

I'll try again when I'm back. Thanks all for the input!

when you increase boost over stock spec don't you need gapping spark plugs (0.018" - 0.022") to reduce Misfires / Drivetrain Malfunction?

Bringing this one back, was there any update on this issue? Just curious, I have a 2019 x5 50i and I’m getting engine malfunction with the racechip gts black on settings 3 and 5 with 93 octane.
