Exactly that. And for my son I even set a 20min a day limit of using games and some apps. He’s unlimited only in using text and phone because that’s why he got a phone. If he wants to download an app we as parents receive an information on our iPhones and we need to approve the download.

The only reason I understand why you’d prefer an RSE is to have the ability to control it from the drivers seat. But you will not need that way sooner then you might think.

FYI I'm a tech junkie. My whole house is alive where everything moves and operates with the click of a button and voice. So I'm well aware of pros and cons of the tablets vs RSE that I've had for 10+ years in all my cars.

Pros:
- before the new comfort system most holders weren't crush tested.
- I have full control upfront
- on a long trip all 3 passengers (1 upfront) can watch the same movie with amazing theater quality sound
- I create a playlist that consists of a heavy educational movies in my native language with a very few disney mixed in (in the native language... my poor kids)
- "entertainment" starts with one click of a button. You turn on the screen and it starts playing automatically where left off. Great for smaller kids or short rides.
- RSE is not really limited. Plug in a Firestick and download any app or screen mirror your phone.

That being said, this last 2020 BMW RSE was a disappointment. If you decide to go RSE, either get the previous model (2017 was great) or look elsewhere.

Ok, the general consensus seems to be not to get the option, personally I'm not debating whether to take it or not, just interested in some personal experiences with RSE. We've had such bad experiences with portable DVD players so we want something a bit more solid to play DVDs on.

I have RSE in my 2020. I am all pro RSE and have had it in all my cars. I cannot make any public statements about the current 2020, so if interested in my personal experience, please contact me directly.

Rear Seat Entertainment

I added this option to keep our 2 lil ones entertained. My sales guy(but i also didnt research) never mentioned that iphone really isnt compatible with it. It doesnt make sense because the car itself has apple carplay but you cant use it in conjunction with the rear seat entertainment.

Some have suggested to get the display holder option and just get 2 tablets. That is 100000% better than these screens. If i could id have bmw remove my rear seat entertainment. When i first got the car i thought it was cool but its the worst 2000 something dollars i think i have ever spent.

It doesnt come with any headphones. Its basically not wireless. I dont want a box of dvds or a usb stick full of movies that i have to manually add n delete. Any rear seat entertainment in any car in 2020 needs to be like watching apple tv, especially for 2000 plus dollars.

I love the x5. It drives buttery smooth and its so luxurious but this option is just not worth it at the moment. My rant is over.

That's what I did. I couldn't justify the $2000+ price tag of the RSE.

So, I bought 2 refurbished Samsung Tab A tablets for less than $100 each on eBay... 2 BMW universal holders.... 2 BMW cases specific to the Tab A..... 2 memory cards for more storage... and 2 connecting wires.

Total... less than $500.

All part numbers are in the link in my signature if you are interested.

So first let me advise few things you may not have yet considered. You can connect an apple TV (I've had that, amazon stick and rocku). You can then mirror your iphone to the screen. You can also mirror it through HDMI. Galaxy mirrors directly.

Now to the fun part. I've had rear entertainment for the past 10+ years. The last one was in my x5 2017 (I had 100s of movies on a usb hard drive, Netflix, Disney, could connect a playstaion - you name it). It is an awesome option when done right. So I was expecting a major upgrade with 2020. However long story short, the 2020 was under-performing or not performing at all in 15+ areas in comparison to the previous model. I was able to claim my car a lemon solely on non warranty conforming rear entertainment's software.

Has anyone been experiencing the same?

Also the library isn't updating (shows movies that are no longer on the stick).

Has anyone had luck putting non-supportive support to work and make them do what the car says in the manual it would do? I'm not been successful at this.

Is there a way to download an .avi codec? I spoke to a few coders, but none work with the new OS (iDrive 7).
Did you ever get the AVI files working?

Using 1 TB SSD with exFAT formatting my RSE is working as expected. I believe as long as the codec is supported the container (AVI) is not a problem. I'll double test and share my findings. Here are the official supported file types:

Audio playable formats: MP3, MP4, M4A, M4B, AAC, WMA, FLAC.

Video playable formats: MP4, M4V, WMV, XVID, H.264

I played an .avi video file and it worked fine.

I noticed a few posts mentioning plugging in a firestick or apple tv. Does that mean RSE has a standard HDMI port in case you want to plug in a different device such as streaming sticks, video game consoles, etc?

Yes, the RSE unit has 2 USB-C ports and 1 HDMI. i've connected an Amazon Fire Stick and stream everything from it using my X5's onboard wireless connection. It works well, especially if you have VIM coded to allow the front screen to show content while driving.

I am new here. Can you let me know why you do not recommend RSE? Is it for 2020+ only?

RSE brand

Hello, I just bought X5 and I want to put displays in the back for kids. I saw you speak about RSE. What is the brand for those RSE displays, where can I buy? Thx!
