UK owners - winter wheel options?
I have an xdrive30d with M-sport pack. It has 21" with p-zero runflats. I'm based south of London.
I'm considering getting a set of 20" winter wheels and tyres that I can rotate to in the winter. Appreciate that may seem a little rash for what would be a small number of days. Figuring that I will need to buy at least one set of tyres while I own the vehicle so not too much more expensive, given that 20" tyres are cheaper. Anyone else UK based thinking of doing the same? Any thoughts on good suppliers? (I would go non OEM and have been reading the other threads) If I buy a compressor / gunk solution how risky would non runflats be? |

I'm pondering another set of at least-tyres for my 20"'s 740Ms... I now regret not taking the 21" and keep these SUMMER TYRES on, and buy a set of 20" for all season/winter...
Turns out the P-Zero have Zero reputation in winter from my reading. It's particularly annoying as I come from P7's that were excellent on the X3!

Ive been thinking the same. Wheelbasealloys have got packages for 20 inch wheels and winter tyres starting from only £1350 for all 4. You can pay that just for 1 with bmw own wheels. I understand if you have the m sport brakes the 19 wont fit around the callipers so 20 minimum. My car came with the 22inch so cant get winter tyres only that big. In the USA Pirelli seem to do them on a Bentley spec but not available here in the Uk. Might take the plunge in a few weeks. You also need to add about £150 for the tpms.

I've been revisiting the topic. I asked BMW and they quote me £2900 for 4 19" wheels with tyres. They do look a bit meh!
However shopping around I can have 4 x non-oem 20" wheels with all weather for ~£1900 ... Reasonably close to the BMW looks. https://www.wheelbasealloys.com/allo...ear/bmw/x5/go5 Also in 21's but with a lot less choices of tyres/wheels, but these were are 'ok' but £2600 with the all weather tyres: https://www.wheelbasealloys.com/allo...nch/bmw/x5/go5 Anyone took the plunge yet? What did you buy?

I have just ordered the black 748M 20" wheels with Michelin Alpin 5 tyres. I don't really like the 22" wheels the car came with (pre owned @10000 miles, with a good saving on new) and may well keep these new wheels on all the time and either sell the 22 inch wheels or store and put back on the car when I sell it in 4 years time, hopefully the next series X5 wont have different bolt holes and hub size!

Not worried about using winter tyres all year around? I hear they just destroy themselves!
I would never have picked 22", they cost a fortune and I'd never be able to drag them in places I drag my car on 20"'s -- 21"s PERHAPS...

I bought the car 2nd hand so didn’t have a choice with wheels, so have some money to play around with tyres and wheels. Most high spec cars seem to have the 22 inch wheels.
Previously I have always had 19 summer and 18 winter tyres on my e70 and F15. Like function over looks My teenage boys like the 22inch wheels and to be honest the ride is fine. I might put them back on in the summer, or I might try and sell, and buy a second set of bmw 20 alloys. Or alternatively I might run the 20 inch Michelin’s down year round and the stick on All season tyres, hopefully they might make run flat by then. Lots of options, and the car is great Last edited by x5x2; 11-20-2019 at 12:01 AM.. Reason: Grammar |

I’ve bought some 21” from LK Performance, I’ve bought some Goodyear Ultragrip Gen 1 tyres in 275/40/21 from oponeo for £180 each. All in it has cost me £2k for the lot including TPS.

I have just ordered a new X5 xLine (19" wheels), and decided to go the 'all season' route. The dealer will fit Michelin CrossClimate tyres (165/50 R19) pre-delivery, at a price similar to tyre shops. Whilst they are not "BMW approved" (no all season tyres are) the dealer is happy to fit them.
I then have 4 standard tyres with just delivery mileage to sell - so if anyone is interested... I have all-season tyres (Bridgestone A05) on my present car, and in normal (summer) use they don't seem any different to summer tyres to me. They have the side advantage of being a lot better on wet grass/ mud. |
