Acoustic Glass on X5

This has been a tough decision on whether I should get acoustic glass. It’s a $600 option and I can’t decide.

I do like the idea of a quiet interior but mostly do trips around the suburbs. Longest drive we do in the car is about an hour and that’s really to a friends place or relatives. Dealers never get it on their stock cars so they all think it’s not worth it but I think that’s a limited perspective.

Can folks please let me know whether they have gotten it and whether they can tell a difference? should I get it?

I have it in mine and have had loaners without it, both my wife and I could tell the difference. Granted there were differences in tire and engine but still believe the difference in sound level was the glass. That said, the vehicles with normal glass are still quieter than my previous vehicles.

Great to know guys. It’s $650 now so I’m hesitating but might as well get it since we buy and hold cars for a while. I don’t do a lot of highway driving, do you guys notice it driving around the suburbs too?

I have it as well and I love how quiet the interior is. Although I haven't done a back to back comparison with a car without it, I feel it's quieter than the cars we test drove back when we were looking to place the order.

Whether it's worth $600 or not.... It's tough to say. The X5 without it is very quiet to begin with, but now that I've experienced the X5 with it, can't imagine going back to not having it.

Definitely notice how quiet it is in even just regular non-highway driving.

I debated it and ultimately included it as an option.

100% worth it IMHO. No regrets.

My F15 did not have it, the G05 has it, much quiet

The acoustic glass is usually available for lux car like RR, not Range Rover, 7 series

Mercedes s-class quiet which is one of the best.

One thing buyers should know about Acoustic Glass is that in case of emergency it is very hard to break. Those emergency glass breaker tools are useless.

Thanks guys. This is helpful. Seems like a no brainer and I should get it. Who wouldn’t want the car to be quieter or feel more luxurious?

I take the point about it being harder to break and hope that is never needed.

C&D found the X7 to be the quietest SUV outside of a Bentley or Rolls, they didn't test the X5 noise but I'm sure it's nearly identical. I believe it's quieter than the S class

Edit yes it is, see below:

C&D is pretty thorough with their sound testing. Would also point out that although the differences look small numerically, per C&D:

Also, allow us to remind you that this is a logarithmic measurement, which means small numerical differences make a big deal; every 3-dB increase represents a doubling of the sound pressure.

I believe the windows automatically lowers if an accident occurs.

we added ours for $300, but even at $650, we would still add this option. Ive noticed a big difference, but wife doesn't, until....

We were driving down the highway one day and a harley bike passes us. Wife shouted "see you can still hear the loud noise outside". So, I sped up to the bike and roll my windows down. well lets say the bike's exhaust was so loud she wasnt able to hear anything till i roll my window back up!

the glass wont eliminate all the noise, but do make a big difference imo.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.
This may be a case of over thinking it (yes, I know from experience). I have an order in the works with the glass option but have no plans to change it. It sounds like your dealer is very customer service oriented, to which you are lucky so if in doubt, just start over. However, I gotta say $650 difference on an $80k car, especially on an option that is so well liked just seems trivial.
A benefit not mentioned is that acoustic glass may be more bullet proof... not to be taken lightly in this political environment!

Just thinking what Kind of Dealer is this...

First if they never had one with acoustic Glas how can they say it's not worth to have it?

Second, never trust someone that can not prove or at least show you why you should pick other thing.

Third. If the dealer is like that just wondering how the mechanics are. If you have a problem you maybe will ear that it's normal....

Forth, just change dealer before is too late ☺️

I had this option on F15 and I ordered again on G05.

You will be glad to have it...

So my sales advisor told me that adding the acoustic glass wont really help the tire noise on rough gravel since that sound comes from below. He said the acoustic glass will only help with honks, motorbikes and passing vehicle noise.

Is that true? Especially when driving over concrete roads there is a specific noise from the car - does acoustic glass help with reducing those or is my sales advisor correct?

Also, I am looking for 21in rims and he said the 21s produce more noise than 20s on the same road.
I guess I am finding acoustic glass not worth the investment. But can you guys who have this option give some feedback. Thanks.

I got it on my car but don’t know how different it is from one without. It’s pretty quiet and I personally think it makes the interior experience more luxurious. You don’t hear as much outside which does reduce your sensitivity to things around you so just remember that. Some might think for city driving that’s not safe

This is the one option that I hope they offer in Canada. But no, it's not available in Canada. I hope the could offer this rather than the laser head light.

It is also a safety feature. Bmw doesn't advertise with this but Volvo does. I think it is the same type laminated glass. It is more difficult to break in and should also be safer in an accident.

I have it on my 45e and it is really quite. In town I always drive electric so I should hear more environmental noise but I don't. So probably it works.
