However I agree for a V8 that is an impressive result. My 50e on the other hand has a combined 40.1 or ICE only 26.1 mpg and has >200lbs added weight. Outstanding as well.

It’s a half second slower 0-60 and it’s missing your engine roar.

In general I agree with your sentiments regarding LCI.

And the X6 looks sharp!
You are correct sir. I really am not concerned about gas mileage. Merely reporting what my vehicles wizzrdry has calculated to be the miles per gallon since new in my case.
I really enjoy this M60i and would be equally as happy if it got 12 miles/gallon which it might if it were piloted by a highly aggressive driver who sees public streets as a personal grand prix course along with drag racing from one red light to the next.
The M60i is more than .5 second faster and does not roar, neither did my M50i.
What exactly is the 40.1 figure you are showing?

I believe that figure is just total miles / total gallons.

Total miles includes all drive modes. So this metric is just to show the effective mpg factoring in the “free” electric miles.

It’s an utterly useless number as the car does operate in this blended average consumption and is no indication of range etc. simply put if someone has a daily commute within the e range of the 50e this number could grow towards being infinite!!!

Yeah, Thanks for the explanation as there is absolutely no way a 5700 lb SUV gets 40 mile/gallon of fuel. Wasn't sure what the 40.1 was actually about.
"Free" electric miles.

That is correct. It total miles / gallon. That’s the one the car is showing since factory (40.1).

The real ICE value is hidden and you have to calculate yourself (26.1).

To me it’s not completely useless.

If it is going to be near infinite or > 90 mpg then they should have an EV.

Less than 30 mpg an ICE only.

I used approx. 1/3 on EV and 2/3 on ICE. That’s what I think a PHEV is for.

Would it be correct to assume that the 40.1 "mpg" would be much more accurate and meaningfull if the electricity, recharging hardware, wiring, etc. were free?

From a financial perspective yes.

I think they are using it for Sales, Marketing and Political reasons.

To me they should show the real value (26.1) and not have me to pull out a calculator to get to it.

This continues throughout the MyBMW app. See screenshot for the December stats.

I can see your point on using this number as a gauge to usability fit. But, one could assume that should be thought through ahead of time.

Also please Don’t get me wrong, I’m a huge supporter of the 50e. This number is just a bit silly to me except for the case you just posted.

Agreed.

As in my previous post with the December stats I can’t get to the real value, unless I would reset ”individual” every first of the month.

I love my 50e and LCI, but I would prefer real values in mpg and miles/kWh.

Glad to hear that you are pleased with your LCI 50e and most important. Very few of us here really get off on mpg, miles/kwhr, or any of that dry stuff.
Enjoy the ride!

Coming from a 'dumb car', ie unconnected and low on technology, I'm not finding iDrive 8.5 hard to use at all. I'm a huge fan of the controller, and I'm very comfortable with that sort of setup from Cadillacs. It's more ergonomic than reaching, and reduces the distraction and safety issues screens bring.

The idrive controller is all you ever need. Makes all the bmw infotainment systems better than the rest. Reaching while driving is the worst!

We have had a 45e for 3 + years and we have an average of about 57 mpg since we got it. We have done a fair few road trips in that period. I know electricity is not free but honestly we did not notice any difference in our monthly power bill here in Houston.

That’s great…
But the point I was trying to make is your 45e’s total range is not 57 * total gallons. I’d bet - It’s nearly half that number. Soo it’s not a real usable mpg number… the 57 is your individual effective “value” of the hybrid setup but other than this that number is totally useless for any other application… its specific to you and not indicative of anyone else’s experience..

Unfortunately I think the iDrive controller is going away for the next X5 generation. The 2024 X1 with iDrive 9 is touch screen only. That seems to be the direction BMW is going.

That would really stink.
However, I’ve heard they are going without Idrive controllers in lesser models to purposely create more distinction btw entry level and higher model series.
For example the new x3 is coming fall 2024 and that’s after the x1 and will have Idrive controller. They could have easily removed it to be like the x1. I am hopeful they will not do such foolish acts in future releases of the higher models .

I think we will see the iDrive controller staying and some buttons coming back in the next generation. It seems like there is growing pressure to have some controls be done by buttons. I remember reading that the NHTSA may be looking at some of their rules and how they may apply.

X1 is a low margin, high volume product in a competitive marketplace. That's the sort of product that gets parts removed to improve profitablity.
