Cost of PPF for 2021 X5MC

Hi folks

I'm curious how much people are paying for a full exterior body PPF install with edges tucked. I am getting Xpel Ultimate PPF installed and I'm located in the SF Bay Area.

I received a quote for $7,800 and $7,000. Am I getting over charged?

Thanks!

Same package in AZ can be found for 4000 - 6000... But that was before Covid so it seems like prices go up since 2020...

I was quoted $6500 for full STEK dynomatt PPF film today.

STEK goes head to head with Xpel ultimate and is clearer in some reviews.

The dynomatt version has a clear frosted look to it.

Obviously, not a like-for-like comparison as i'm a Brit, but FYI I paid £4,000 for the full Xpel PPF ultimate plus, and then £350 for GTECH ceramic coating

it's big money, but it's worth it to preserve the precious paint. shop around, of course, but for me the price was OK.

6 months on, and after a "check-up" of the PPF, i'm still happy with it. the fitting was very well done, i'm not stressed about damage, much easier to clean, all in all, happy with the value, especially as i'll keep the car for 5 years minimum.

with an MBB X5MC the paint is such an important part of the enjoyment of the car so protecting the paint is a no-brainer.

I've got a shop here that does Euro cars same color ranges 3500 - 6500 depending on size... That is just a respray not fixing any damage, all damage is priced for the repair it needs. Basically they sand off the top layers and you have a flat looking color coat and they spray the entire car again. Now they are not doing the door jams, hood, trunk ect just the outside because its color match. I've had two done and no way you can tell the jams are different. (not like when you wrap a white car black and when you open the door and see the white paint) LOL.

They also have options on how many layers of clear you want ect.... But they all come out looking like new. Some of the local dealers here use them for CPO and lease fixes.

Excellent. So it's actually cheaper than ppf in most instances.

Yeah only thing really comes down to is how long can you live with the damage from scratches, chips, ect before you respray.... I found out for me its about at the three year mark out here in AZ. Seems like we get sand blasted a lot here. So for me PPF some come with 7 - 10 year warranty, but if you don't due a full wrap you will have to respray than re-wrap bc of what the sun does to paint here. Each region is a bit different on length and time before damage and fade really start to come into play.

In the past 15 years I haven't kept a car for more that 3 years. I see investing in performance and sound over ppf, but that's just me.

Yeah makes total sense, I tend to keep mine long term well not the daily one that goes once it hits the value of trade in or if I lease. lol

Yea, if you trade your car in the dealer literally never even looks at the car. They give you a trade in value right there at their desk. Especially if you do BMW to BMW.

You sure as fuck will never get that PPF cost back on a trade in...ever. Same with mods.

Im thinking of just going naked and taking the scratches and rock chips like a man.

$6500 is too much some some plastic film with 0% ROI.

You can take off the mods and sell them. Yes not at retail but you'd have used them and enjoyed them.

The worst part is when you get a rock chip that goes through the film and hits the paint, or one that actually dents the plastic.

You have to take the film off, fix the panel and pay to put film on again. Its a double whammy.

"Wraps & Tints", Preston ... sensible prices and 2 guys who take a pride in their work, and have done various bits for me either for free or a nominal value as i've used them for the full coverage PPF

The whole point of PPF is for it to be a sacrificial layer to take those scratches and chips. This entire point is negated when it costs the same to PPF an entire car or OEM re-spray the car. The worst part is, if you damage your PPF you have to replace a whole section AND respray that area.

I really don't get it. If the PPF was lets say 20% the cost of an entire respray then it would make perfect sense. But BMW will literally charge 1800 to respray a bumper...the same cost as PPFing it.

PPF installers are out of their minds charging what they charge for their labor. They get away with it because the cars that get PPFd are expensive and these people (read: us) don't mind spending another 6-8K for fabricated "piece of mind"

This is the equivalent of buying a phone screen protector and cases that costs just as much as a new $1000 iphone. The best expense ratio is when you buy a $20 glass protector and a $30 case. Full protection for 5% of the phone's price. Or perhaps 10% of the cost of replacing the front and rear of the phone.

agreed PPF is way overpriced. that's why I go with ceramic coating only which is over priced also but not as insane as PPF.
car gets dents then be it. move to the next
