It's up in the US too. People have been driving like idiots since covid, not sure why.

I personally blame the explosion gig drivers like doordash and uber eats. All the accidents around me are from drivers not from the area, staring at their phone and in a rush to get to their next pickup/dropoff.

NYTimes:
“But there has been one major change in driver behavior: the use of smartphones. "Smartphones have become ubiquitous with remarkable speed, overlapping closely with the timeline of rising pedestrian deaths,” Emily, Ben and Josh write.

Smartphones have also become ubiquitous in other countries, of course. But American drivers seem to be addicted to their phones in ways that drivers elsewhere are not. Surveys suggest Americans spend more time on their phones while driving than people do in other countries."

Overall crime is down per the FBI. This doesn't talk about car theft specifically but it does talk about property crime.

Links to the FBI report are in the article if you want to skip the editorial.

But, just like our grocery prices, insurance rates aren't going to drop now that the factors originally influencing the increases are being mitigated.

Motor vehicle theft is shown on the data and it has greatly increased YOY. Probably down in the West due to all of the EV's in California that no one wants to steal.

No point stealing cars if you can just waltz into a high end store and steal whatever you want without repurcussion.

There is some truth to that and is why the crime stats don't show the true crime rate. Many thefts that would have been prosecuted are not even reported nowadays since they will not be investigated/prosecuted/punished.

Or there is an overwhelming amount of former Kia owners in the Northeast

The most interesting info in that article to me was the next paragraph, where they suggest a partial explanation:

"It also partly reflects vehicle technology. Nearly all cars in the U.S. are automatic transmission, freeing drivers’ hands (or so they may think) to use phones. In Europe, almost 75 percent of cars still have gears that a driver must change manually."

My F15 2018 was stolen from my drive in January. Even with 20+ years of NCB, my insurance on my (now new to me) 2021 G05 with a ghost immobiliser is £1.7k, up from £750 in March 2023. Hertfordshire for reference.

Mental.

StateFarm just raised my rate by 20%. Tried shopping around and all say to stick with them as their quotes are a lot higher. Even LiMu Emu (Liberty Mutual) was higher.

Home:Auto is just upside down right now . I was expecting major increases on both but only small rate creep. I am mindful to see what the next renewal will be....

Auto, Home - whether they are underwriting in ones area, rates....
I flip flop all the time on Auto every 2-3 years after the new customer rate is turned into the, this guy is sticking with us rate...Can't flip flop now, as alot of carriers are not underwriting or the latter and give you the try me price, only to hike it up 6 months later.

I had my X3 m40i stolen and then recovered in Jan last year. Swapped to the X5 M50i in Apr and my insurance went from £560 on the X3 to £1300 with a tracker for the X5 (£2K without a tracker). I put the big jump down to the theft and recovery. This year I cant get a renewal under £2k with a tracker on the M50i. 50yrs old full NCD.

It’s a disgrace that you get to a certain age and should be able to drive what you like to a certain degree. All this insurance malarkey means that I need to put off my midlife crisis!

I have Ghost on mine, and I found that by adding a tracker it made little to no difference with my quotes - hence I didn't find the need to spend money on the tracker!

Not sure if the BMW Connected app, with its vehicle location on a map and the fact I have the 3D Remote View counts as a tracker of any kind - probably wouldn't I guess!

The tracker dropped mine by just over £700 last year. Paid for the 5 year subscription and still some.

Similar to me then. Its crazy that they think they can more then double the price and call that 'normal' due to general price increases.

Check around online - if its anything like mine you should be able to find something closer to last years price. Good luck!
