USB/iPod Adapter now stock option for 3 series convertible

Sorry guys, could have done a broader search (but came up short on a quick search, please no flames). Any idea what iPod/USB adapter may be? This is a BMW option listed for the new 3 series convertible. Start of production of this option is March 2007. Can anyone describe this feature in detail? Is this option available on any other models? Thx.

It is basically the same as the iPod adapter that is currently a dealer installed option. It will be available as a factory option on all 3-series as of 3/07 production.

I'm not sure the OP's question is being answered. The ordering guide clearly states iPod/USB adaptor. All those people who paid $600 for that dealer install must be so happy with the iPod part that they missed the USB part huh?

No, actually it's not.

Any ideas what this new option is then (apart from the obvious)?

There is speculation in within BMW (because they have not released engineering details) as to what the USB is capable of. Hope to know more sooner rather than later.

The iPod adaptor cable acts as a super USB cable with additional feeds for controlling the iPod. It should be easy to either isolate the USB-specific wires to a standard mini-USB plug (for example for use with USB cell phones or even cameras) or two have an additional mini-USB plug in addition to the iPod adaptor. It also makes possible adaptors for other mp3 players (the ones that aren't iPods....). Should be interesting and also cheaper than a dealer install. It also sugests that the iPod MOST adaptor retrofit is very popular. If you're in the market, I'd strongly recommend it.

The USB thing would be very useful - It would be great if you could buy one of those cheap usb flash sticks w/ an mp3 player and play those files on the oem sound system. Additionally, it would be great to be able to read the track names on the i-drive just like the current ipod integration adapter offered...
