X5 M60i Exhaust sound changes

Curious if exhaust sounds would change from the break-in period for the 2024 X5 M60i? Only 2k miles on my car and originally when in sport I would get some mild exhaust pops and burps on deceleration. Now I am getting absolutely nothing. Could the fuel octane have an impact on this? Maybe the car came with low octane and since I have put in only higher octane this impacted it? Or maybe exhaust was going through some sort of break-in period.

At 7000+ miles my exhaust note is exactly the same as it was when I drove to off the lot.

I have almost 7k miles on mine and the exhaust sounds the same as day I received it.

From what I've read, the LCI M60i's exhaust is extremely muted.

Why BMW decided to make their V8 not sound like one is beyond me

I think it sounds like a V8. It’s just a very understated V8.

So after a bit more researching apparently there is an iconic sounds button in my 2024 X5 m60i I had no idea about. In my original post I mentioned the crackling and pops from the muffler in sport disappeared from my car randomly. I thought these were real exhaust noises coming from the muffler but after researching I beleive it is all fake noise coming from the Iconic Sound button and noise it pumps into the car. The noise is now back after I found and turned the button on. I feel a bit duped by BMW since I thought these were real and even on my test drive I said something to the sales guy like "woah listen to that exhaust" and he said "yeah I know, sounds great" but the whole time it was fake noise lol... Do I have this right there is no change within the muffler and iconic sound in the x5 M60i is fake or does it open up the exhaust notes a bit?

** update, spoke to BMW if these were fake noises in the car and am being told that the iconic sound button amplifies the sounds that already exist on the car. When in sport mode the exhaust flaps will open as well so the noises are internal and external.

I’ve got a thread on this you can check out here if you want! I’m at 3k miles and there’s no difference.

3000 kms, no change.
I liken it to a QUIET WRX exhaust.

"Iconic sounds" does nothing to the exhaust or the sound heard outside the car. It is purely audio speaker driven on the inside!

Right but is the noise being heard inside the car "real" noise that is being played on the speakers, or completely fake, made up sounds that don't exist outside the cabin?

I thought with BMW the noise is real. i.e. Outside of the car you get the exact same sounds, but you just can't hear it inside the cabin due to sound deadening so the active sound basically plays those noises via the speakers.

I know on my G80 M3, in the cabin with active noise off I cannot hear anything at all. But when my friend videos me driving from outside, the exhaust is making all sorts of burbles and pops. Those same noises I hear inside when active sound is turned on.

They are fake sounds that try to match your driving.

So its a sound profile that the car thinks matches the way you're driving? Jeez BMW. I'm disappointed

The thing is, I'm really happy with the M3's outside the car sound - I just want to hear THAT inside the damn cabin! No need for any fake noises.

The unfortunate reality is there's literally NO sound outside the car. The iconic sounds amplifies sound inside the cabin.
It actually does a reasonable job, however it is FAKE. You hear an amplified version of the cars actual sound inside the cabin, however no one hears anything on the ouitside.

It doesn’t do it anymore. This is the biggest disappointment I have for this car. My ‘21 X5 M50i sounded awesome and I loved it; it sounded BA. Unfortunately, it was totaled this past October with only 25K miles on it. I ordered a new M60. I didn’t research anything about it as I assumed it would be the same. I wanted the same exact configuration that was in my M50. In hindsight, I should’ve found a low mileage identical ‘21 CPO. To get that aggressive sound again I’d have to get the exhaust changed out and I’m not willing to spend anymore money on this car.

IMO, my M60i purrs like a kitten compared to my M50i which had a nice growl and rumble to it. I’m not happy with it. I feel like I’ve been tricked.

I don't notice any difference in exhaust between my 2023 M50i and 2024 M60i, both subdued.

Yea I think you need a 2022 or older for the more aggressive notes. 2023 models they really neutered them. I noticed this switching btw the 23 m550 and the 22 m50.

I got pretty tired of not hearing any exhaust on M60i so I ended up ordering Red Star downpipe with GESI cats. It should be here within few weeks.
It is quite expensive but I think it is only way to improve exhaust sound while still utilizing factory exhaust flap control for drone-free highway driving.

Good to know. If I get an X6 M50, I want it to sound like one. 2021-2022 sounds like the years to target.

On the 24 X5M I just picked up most of the sounds come through the speakers and the exhaust is self is fairly muted. I really dislike that, both the muted exhaust and the stupid speaker sounds.
