Resurfacing this old thread since I am about to buy a X5 M50i and am considering buying the Ultimate Care+ package to go with it (probably the 2 year one). I was wondering what people thought of the idea in general and whether the X5s were shaping up to be particularly hard on things like brakes where they may need more frequent changes, making the plan a relatively better deal.

Conversely, does anyone have experience with going to an independent mechanic in terms of price differential for the types of parts/services that would be covered?

Thanks

In Chicago we have a few independent shops that are BMW specific (or at least focuses on BMW). My experience has been that they are actually not much cheaper than dealership. Oil change was like $10 less and sometimes dealers have specials that actually make it cheaper to go to dealer. With that said, one indy shop was particularly impressive to me. Their mechanics are very honest and would rather tell you not to change something if it's not critical (of course, they do warn you what the consequences are should something break) so you can make your own judgement

I’ve had a similar experience in the Twin Cities. When I called for quotes on regular maintenance work, the independent shops were not much cheaper and sometimes more expensive than the dealership.

It’s a math problem at the end of the day...

Will you need $600 worth of brakes or wipers inside of 3/36? Will you consume $1850 worth of brakes and wipers plus the additional year of oil changes by 4/50?

Me, nope. Ran through my last X5’s maintenance file. I needed rear brakes at 38,000 miles - two months shy of 4 years (this was covered by the 2013 X5’s service/warranty). I needed the front brakes replaced at 48,000 miles - 4 months shy of 5 years (paid out of pocket). I average one oil change a year @ $129 per...

Brake changes are around $900 (I paid $820 a year ago for my fronts which were not covered).

The base 2019 X5 coverage with the $600 “ultimate care+ plan”... I would not have been covered for rear brakes, and only gained a set of wipers - for $600. If I had the $1850 “ultimate care+1” plan, it would have covered the front brakes and an extra oil change in year 4... and maybe some wipers - about $1000 worth of service/parts - for $1850.

BMW has all the data. They know the average vehicle won’t require new brakes inside of 36,000 miles. If you think you will, slap down $600 and save $300 on the brake job and get some free wiper blades maybe. If you think you will mow through your front and rear brakes inside of 4 years or 50,000 miles, slap down $1,850 and pre-pay for the brakes and get yourself a discounted oil change in year 4 and a set of free wipers.

Some will save a little... more will lose a little. BMW will make a lot - they know the numbers and will not give anything away.

Bottom line, do your own math and know what you do/don’t get based on your usage and driving.

Also know that - they WILL negotiate at the dealer on these prices. By a good percentage.

I just traded in my E70 diesel for an 2022 X5 hybrid. The E70, like my previous E53, needed brakes under 40,000. The E53 warped the original and replacement rotors but I cured that with drilled rotors. I guess I'm a little hard on brakes. The E70 got drilled rotors and Cool Carbon pads.

Even though I can still do that work I am going to drop the cash at the dealer to reduce/remove any worry for my wife. Insurance is not just a dollars issue to everyone: there is the "peace of mind" knowledge that these items are covered. The hybrid will probably do better with less braking, using regeneration to regain some energy.

This is something I've tried to mentally calculate. The 45e weighs more, but has Regen, how it all plays out I'm not sure . . . obviously driving styles have the biggest impact. But will the Regen be used enough to counteract the addition wear from the weight of the 45e?

Depends on your vehicle and who you buy it from. These three people usually give good pricing.

Daniel Kim at dkim@saffordauto.com, Jeff Steel at jeff.steel@passportauto.com and Christine from GOLFFRR 's place at christinen@bmwofcamarillo.com

It may be throwing good money after bad to extend it but eventually you will need brakes and get something back I guess.

2020 G05 with M-Sport package and M-Sport brakes. Ballpark price is fine if anyone has it.

I have +1. Wanted to extend to +2. Can’t be that much. +1 was already 2k.

You should be able to get an idea from MyGarage. This page used to give the pricing but now it directs you to MyGarage. Maybe it will work for you.

Extending to +2 from dealer is 1299 plus tax. Brakes will run 1700 from dealer with new rotors. 1300 if rotors micro grind. I’m a bit turned off to having CBS dictate what is done and when, so I think I would rather control my own maintenance at this point…so leaning towards not extending.
